SUMMARY:FOCB Event: Turtles of Wisconsin
DESCRIPTION:World Turtle Day is celebrated every year on May 23rd\, offering a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness about turtle conservation and the preservation of their habitats. In Wisconsin\, we are fortunate to have 11 unique species of turtles\, but unfortunately\, due to habitat loss and other human-related impacts\, turtle populations statewide are on the decline. \nJoin us at the Cedarburg Bog for a special event where you’ll have the chance to learn about the distinct characteristics of each turtle species\, their behavior\, and their important role in the ecosystem. You’ll also gain insight into the challenges turtles face and discover how we can all contribute to their protection and conservation. \nCome celebrate World Turtle Day with us and Waukesha County Land Conservancy’s Land Management Director\, Helen Holtz\, at The UWM Field Station located at the Cedarburg Bog. Let’s work together to ensure the survival of these incredible creatures!

SUMMARY:FOCB Event: Astronomy in the Bog
DESCRIPTION:Join Scott Nehring for a journey through our model solar system as we learn about the planet’s orbital periods and the distances between them. \nWe will also be setting up telescopes to travel to a variety of nebulas\, star clusters\, and galaxies with a focus on understanding the vast distances needed to travel to them. Our visible universe is huge and it’s our hope that you will be able to see the stars and constellations in more of a three-dimensional way than ever before. \nUnfortunately\, we do not have a planetary line up that evening\, but Saturn should be in a good position for viewing\, and that is one of our favorite planets to see.

SUMMARY:Bumble Bee Queens\, Nests\, and Spring Wildflowers
DESCRIPTION:Event Held at Riveredge Nature Center\, 4458 County Hwy Y\, Saukville\, WI \nDr. Jeff Karron’s upcoming talk features striking slow-motion videography to highlight the interdependence of bumble bee queens and spring-flowering perennial plants.  Early-blooming native perennials provide the essential food resources queens need to survive\, establish nests\, and successfully raise their first brood.  In turn\, many spring flowering plants depend heavily on bumble bees for effective pollination and seed production.  All video and photography featured in this presentation were filmed in high-quality woodland and prairie sites across Southeastern Wisconsin.  The talk highlights the importance of conserving and restoring early-season floral resources to sustain bumble bee populations. \nRegister through the Friends of the Cedarburg Bog: Friends of the Cedarburg Bog | Event Registration

SUMMARY:Understanding Bird Populations & How They Change
DESCRIPTION:Date & Time:\nIn person\, Thursday evenings\, March 26\, 2026 – April 23\, 2026\, 7:00 – 8:30 pm. \nInstructor:\nWilliam Mueller is the Director Emeritus of the Lake Michigan Bird Observatory. He most recently served on the Wisconsin Bird Conservation Partnership’s Steering Committee and was the co-chair of its Issues Committee. He has had many other leadership roles in bird conservation projects\, including serving as Conservation Chair of the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology (2002 – 2012)\, co-founder of the Midwest Migration Network\, as co-chair of the Midwest Aerial Insectivore Working Group\, and as Project Coordinator for the Milwaukee BIOME Project. \nThe Course:\nIn less than a single human lifetime\, 2.9 billion breeding adult birds have been lost from the United States and Canada\, across every ecosystem\, and including some of the most abundant and familiar bird species. In this course we will examine how we determine the abundance and distribution of different bird species\, for both bird populations in Wisconsin and at the national and international level. State and federal monitoring programs will also be discussed. We will also consider how bird populations have changed\, what species are currently “at-risk” and why\, and how monitoring programs can be used in management and conservation. We will also review the many organizations that work on studying bird populations. There will be a brief test (optional) during the final class period. \nRecommended materials:\n\nPlease bring a laptop or tablet to the first class.\nClass handouts will be provided at the first class. Online readings will be given weekly\, but there are no required books.\nNo lodging\, accommodations\, nor food will be provided.\n\nWorkshop fee:\n$80.00. Available for 0.8 CEU. Not offered for college credit. \nRegistration: \nRegistration is for this event in now closed.  Check back next year for a virtual event!

SUMMARY:FOCB Annual Winter Hike & Chili Potluck
DESCRIPTION:Winter presents the opportunity to explore the interior of the Cedarburg Bog.   Jim Reinartz (Field Station Director Emeritus) will lead the annual hike into the heart of the Bog. This is a 4-mile hike\, and weather or snow and ice conditions can make this hike challenging.  In the past we have hiked in bitter cold\, on a warm day with wet slush over the ice\, in deep snow\, with no snow at all on very slick ice\, and when we were lucky\, with a little snow over solid ice.  If ice conditions in the Bog are not safe\, we will hike in the uplands instead.  The Saukville Field Station website (http://uwm.edu/field-station/about /news) will be updated several days prior to the hike with snow and ice conditions.

DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately Stargazing is CANCELLED on 10/17/2025 due to uncooperative weather.  We will try to reschedule the event. \nGet on board as we journey through the October sky. We’ll begin by looking straight up at the Summer Triangle. Cornered by Vega (Lyra)\, Deneb (Cygnus)\, and Altair (Aquila)\, the Triangle contains a number of objects that we will attempt to get in the scope. From there we’ll move over to Pegasus to talk about the “Great Square” and take a look at Andromeda. Also on the list is Saturn\, Jupiter\, and perhaps Uranus if the skies allow. We’ve got globs\, open clusters\, nebulas\, double stars\, galaxies\, and planets on the agenda. Join us for a great night of viewing!

SUMMARY:RESCHEDULED: NS Workshop: Wetland Delineation
DESCRIPTION:Wetland Delineation has been rescheduled to October 03 & 04\, 2025. \nThis course is a practical field-oriented guide to wetland delineation. Wetland delineation is the practice of locating the boundary between what is a wetland\, and thus regulated by state and federal law\, and what is upland. We will discuss what determines a wetland and how to identify and document wetland vegetation\, soils and hydrology during a delineation. We will dig soil pits\, identify vegetation\, look for signs of hydrology\, and physically stake the wetland boundary in the field. In the lab we will discuss the basics of completed data sheets and accurate reporting as well as regulatory oversight. This course is intended for beginners and will focus on relatively undisturbed wetlands present on the UWM Field Station. You can get your feet wet and decide if you want to learn more and make a career of wetland delineation or understand wetland identification for other purposes. Wetland delineation is an important tool for the protection of wetlands\, and is very challenging but rewarding work.

SUMMARY:NS Workshop: Restoring Upland Plant Communities
DESCRIPTION:Plant communities are always in a state of transformation. They can be either moving toward the next phase of succession or regressing due to disturbance. Due to fragmentation and invasion of exotic species\, our woodlands and prairies are being threatened. Our actions as land managers can greatly impact the quality of our remaining natural habitats to restore them to their original beauty. In this workshop\, we will discuss various management practices that work to restore our native prairie and woodland ecosystems to remove invasive species and increasing diversity of both plant and animal inhabitants.
