A Parent’s Guide to Academic Support at UW-Milwaukee: Panther Academic Support Services (PASS)
Many students have found value in attending Panther Academic Support Services (PASS) weekly tutoring, Supplemental Instruction review sessions, as well as exam review sessions, to help achieve their academic goals. PASS provides an excellent resource for students who might be finding their classes challenging.
However, PASS programs are not just for those having difficulty with the class, but for all students who want to improve their current grade or maintain a high letter grade.
In fact, PASS typically has over 30,000 student visits per year. Your student will have access to over 100 Supplemental Instruction leaders and tutors for Math, Humanities, Social Sciences, Foreign Languages, Science, Nursing, Music, and more!
And don’t forget, PASS Programs are FREE to UWM Undergraduate Students!
Need we say more?
Here is a helpful description of the main services PASS can offer your student.
By far, our most popular service, Supplemental Instruction (also known as “SI”) is a type of intensive tutoring that works best with large lecture sections. The SI leader attends class along with the students and then holds four weekly review sessions. By attending class, the SI leader can tailor each review session to course-specific material. UWM Access to Success data has shown that SI attendees receive a higher letter grade than non-SI attendees.
Weekly Small Group Tutoring
Group tutoring is a great way to supplement your classroom learning. Students work with a tutor in groups of five or less. The tutor will give individualized attention to students’ needs, while at the same time students will benefit from the questions and experience of the other group members. All group members sign up separately and are placed in groups according to course and scheduling needs.
PASS offers online tutoring services as another way to supplement your student’s classroom learning. Weekly online tutoring sessions and online exam review sessions are available for most courses.
Academic Coaching is an on-going program built on the fundamentals of the process of learning. Students will work one-on-one with an Academic Coach to identify strengths and weakness in their learning styles. Areas focused on include note-taking, study strategies, test-taking and test-anxiety strategies, and time management.
Residence Hall Evening Tutoring
Studying at night and have a question? PASS offers free evening tutoring for Sandburg, Riverview, and Cambridge Commons residents in math and chemistry.
