FAQs

You can find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions related to office sustainability here.
What materials can I recycle at UWM?
Did you know UW-Milwaukee is a Single-Sort Campus? That means you no longer have to separate glass, paper, or plastic as they now go into one bin!

We recycle:

  • Cardboard & Paperboard*
  • Aluminum cans, containers, pans
  • All plastics numbered 1,2,3,4,5,6,7
  • Mixed paper & junk mail
  • Newspapers, phone books, magazines & catalogs*
  • Rinsed glass bottles & jars (clear, brown, green)
  • Steel cans & empty aerosol cans

*Small amounts of glue, tape, and staples are OK

How do I dispose of batteries and used toner cartridges?
Rechargeable batteries: We recycle Nickel Cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydride, Lead Acid, Lead Gel Cell, Lithium, and Lithium Ion. Tape the battery terminals with clear packing tape and contact University Safety and Assurances for pickup (hazwaste@uwm.edu). Note: Alkaline batteries are safe to dispose of in the regular trash. These are not recycled.

Toner cartridges: Call Print & Copy Services at 414-229-4458 to pick up spent Ricoh cartridges. For information about the proper disposal of non-Ricoh toner cartridges, contact University Safety and Assurances at 414-550-9190.

I would like to eliminate my personal printer to save paper and printer ink use, but I’m concerned about confidentiality when using a shared printer. What are my options?
Use the “Locked” or “Hold” printing options to queue and store printouts until you’re ready to retrieve them. If you’re dealing with sensitive information, locked printing allows you to set a private password to use when you’re ready to release the copies. The “Hold” feature doesn’t require a password, but the items are visible to others in a shared folder.
