SUMMARY:Beyond Barriers: Ethics and Critical Perspectives on Reimagining Gender-Affirming Care in Times of Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Advances in gender-affirming care have been propelled by clinically relevant research\, expanded telehealth access and professional codes of ethics that obligate providers to deliver evidence-based care. Yet\, at the very moment of progress\, transgender people’s health is under siege. Institutional and structural barriers are leaving communities feeling abandoned\, even as individual clinicians push to uphold their ethical commitments in creative and nontraditional ways. This keynote offers ethics-informed critical perspectives on the current landscape of gender-affirming care\, asking how futures of care might be reimagined beyond traditional structures\, and what forms of resistance and resilience are required to sustain ethical practice in times of crisis.  \nHear the lecture in the UWM Student Union’s Alumni Fireside Lounge.

SUMMARY:Beyond Barriers: Ethics and Critical Perspectives on Reimagining Gender-Affirming Care in Times of Crisis
DESCRIPTION:LGBT+ Studies Scholar in Residence — Linda Wesp\, assistant professor in the UWM School of Nursing — will give a keynote address on “Beyond Barriers: Ethics and Critical Perspectives on Reimagining Gender-Affirming Care in Times of Crisis.” \n\n\nAt a moment of both progress and precarity\, gender-affirming care is expanding even as it comes under attack. While institutions retreat\, clinicians continue to uphold their ethical commitments in creative ways. This keynote offers critical perspectives on reimagining care beyond traditional structures\, and considers how resilience and resistance can sustain ethical practice in times of crisis. \nWesp’s research and scholarship focuses on health equity and improved quality of life for marginalized populations through participatory and community-driven interventions\, especially LGBTQIA+ people and populations affected by HIV/AIDS. Wesp has been providing clinical care for LGBTQIA+ populations since 2002 and is a eertified HIV specialist and nationally known expert in transgender health care. \nWesp is co-editor of the recently published book “Clinicians Guide to LGBTQIA+ Care” and has authored various guidelines and protocols for gender-affirming clinical care. She also conducted the Wisconsin HIV/AIDS Oral History Project\, housed at the UWM Libraries Digital Collections. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:AI in Higher Ed: A Dialogue Across Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:AI is rapidly transforming higher education — but how we understand and respond to these changes varies widely. As artificial intelligence becomes more present in our classrooms\, offices\, and daily work\, many of us are navigating uncertainty\, curiosity\, and concern. Some feel excited by the possibilities\, while others feel unprepared or left out of the conversations shaping its future on our campus. \nThis session offers a space to come together and talk about it. Join colleagues from across UWM for a dialogue-focused event where we’ll explore our diverse experiences with AI\, share perspectives\, and build skills for engaging in thoughtful\, inclusive conversations about the technology. You’ll observe a structured dialogue among UWM colleagues representing different viewpoints\, then participate in guided table discussions to reflect on how AI is showing up in your work — and what it means for your role moving forward. \nThis session is designed for faculty\, instructors\, students\, grad students and staff. All perspectives welcome — no AI experience or expertise required. \nRegister for AI in Higher Ed: A Dialogue Across Perspectives
