SUMMARY:Inclusive Teaching Toward Justice – Session 3 (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Inclusive Teaching Toward Justice (ITTJ) – Program Overview\nCo-sponsored by CETL and the Division of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion (DEI)\, this three-part workshop series is a professional development opportunity aimed at preparing instructors to effectively teach UWM’s diverse student body. Instructors will learn principles and practices of inclusive course design\, classroom facilitation and assessment of student learning. \nRegistration is open to all UWM instructors — faculty\, staff\, graduate teaching assistants\, adjuncts — in all disciplines. \nEach session is offered in both an in-person and a virtual format. Participants who attend all three sessions (in either format) and complete the post-session reflections can earn a digital badge of completion. \nFor registration-related FAQs\, please see Inclusive Teaching Toward Justice. \nITTJ Session 3: Inclusive Course and Assignment Design\nThis session will focus on practical ways of designing both courses and specific assignments through an inclusive teaching lens. How do we provide students with\, on the one hand\, the structure and transparency they need to meet expectations\, and on the other hand\, enough flexibility to support their own agency and growth in learning?  Likely topics include: \n\nFeatures of an inclusive course syllabus\nGrowth mindset — why this matters and how to promote it in our assessment plans\nBasic principles and applications of Universal Design for Learning\n\nLocation/format: In person\, in Engelmann B73\nThis in-person lunch meeting will be in CETL’s Innovation Teaching Lab\, in the basement of Engelmann Hall. Some food will be provided; more details will be available closer to the workshop date. \nIf you prefer to attend ITTJ Session 1 virtually\, that session will occur the same week on Wednesday and has its own registration. Please return to our workshop calendar to locate the registration page for that session. \nQuestions about the workshop? Need accommodations?\nPlease contact CETL Teaching Consultant Sarah MacDonald to request accommodations or ask any questions.

SUMMARY:Active Teaching Lab | Strengthen Student Engagement via AI-enhanced Assignments
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Deanna Wesolowski shares how she increased student engagement and learning through the use of AI. Concerned students would use AI to cheat in her classics course\, Dr. Wesolowski adapted: instead of asking students to write a traditional three-page paper\, she tasked them with editing\, revising and critiquing an essay written entirely by Chat-GPT. Dr. Wesolowski found the activity improved student knowledge of course content\, boosted student interest and engagement\, and highlighted to students the danger of relying solely on AI to write their papers. Join us as we examine Deanna’s example and explore methods for adapting her strategies in your own course.
