SUMMARY:Funny\, You Don't Look Funny: Jews\, Comedy\, and Gender
DESCRIPTION:The Sam & Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies is proud to have Jennifer Caplan present “Funny\, You Don’t Look Funny: Jews\, Comedy\, and Gender” as part of the ongoing Faye Greenberg Sigman “Woman of Valor” Lecture series on Wednesday\, March 18\, at 7 p.m. at the Golda Meir Library\, 4th floor conference center. The event also has a virtual option. \nThis talk examines trends in the way Jewish institutions have typically “counted” Jewish engagement in the late 20th and 21st centuries and uses those trends to argue that American Judaism looks healthier and more robust if we think differently about engagement. Humor\, it turns out\, is not only a valid way to approach this revisioning\, but also one of the best ways to highlight positive trends in American Jewish identification. Rather than relying on older “continuity-based” models of what Judaism needs to do to survive that put disproportionate pressure (and blame) on Jewish women\, a contemporary Jewish humor reimagines many aspects of Jewish life — including Jewish gender tropes — and offers younger generations a vision of Jewishness they want to embrace. \nJennifer Caplan is The Jewish Foundation Chair of Cincinnati Chair in Judaic Studies at University of Cincinnati. She is the author of “Funny\, You Don’t Look Funny: Judaism and Comedy from the Silent Generation to Millennials” (2023) and co-editor of “Wit Happens: Global Jewish Humor”(2026). She publishes broadly on Judaism and popular culture with a focus on gender and representation and is currently working on “Unmasked: Jewish Characters in DC and Marvel.” \nTo attend virtually\, register on this webpage. \nThe lecture is made by possible by the Taxman and Temkin families\, and is co-sponsored by UWM’s Departments of English and Women’s and Gender Studies. \n

DESCRIPTION:UWM English Prof. Jason Puskar and OnMilwaukee journalist and historian Bobby Tanzilo will kick off QWERTYFest 2025 with two talks at the location of the original Kleinsteuber’s machine shop\, where the Milwaukee inventors of the QWERTY keyboard worked. Puskar will speak on “German Engineering and the Making of the Modern Keyboard\,” about the “maker space” that networked Milwaukee innovators in the 1860s. Mathis Art Gallery at UWM is delighted to announce our first exhibition of the 2025-26 academic year\, “Max Arthur Cohn: Industrial Subjects.” Join us for the opening reception on Thursday\, Sept. 18\, 5-7 p.m. (curatorial remarks at 5:30 p.m.). \nMax Arthur Cohn (1903-1998) came of age as an artist during a period of crisis and reform in American industry. Among the aims of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal programs were reinvigorating industrial production and giving artists stable work. Cohn was one of thousands of artists employed under the New Deal\, and industrial subjects pervade this period of his career. He became a pioneering figure in silkscreen printing (a medium associated with commercial production)\, co-authoring an influential technical manual and running a successful graphic art business in New York City. Although Cohn’s oeuvre encompasses a variety of subjects and stylistic approaches\, the intersection of art and American industry wends its way throughout his work in both subtle and overt ways. \n“Max Arthur Cohn: Industrial Subjects” draws from the UWM Art Collection – the largest repository of Cohn’s art – and explores his engagement with industry in paint\, drawing and print. It focuses particularly on the 1930s – as Americans grappled with the effects of the Depression – and the 1990s\, when Cohn returned to and reconceived many of his New Deal-era compositions. As the exhibition demonstrates\, Cohn’s works not only represent industry and labor\, but also encourage the viewer to more deeply consider artistic production itself as a form of labor. \nThe exhibition runs through Oct. 23. \nGallery and events are free and open to the public. \nEmile H. DESCRIPTION:A concert-lecture on the Scottsboro Trials\, which stand as one of the most renowned miscarriages of justice in American history. This free event features a lecture and music. No registration is required. The performance will be followed by a Q&A session. \nThe trials began in 1931 with a false accusation of rape against nine Black teenagers. The case went on to invigorate the Civil Rights movement\, earn the international support of the Communist Party and establish itself as a watchword on the American Left. It inspired artistic reactions as well\, most famously by poets Langston Hughes and Richard Wright and novelist Harper Lee\, who adapted its events in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” \nThe program brings this world alive as a concert-lecture featuring Professor Amelia Glaser\, author of “Songs in Dark Times: Yiddish Poetry of Struggle from Scottsboro to Palestine\,” composer/vocalists Heather Klein and Anthony Russell\, and composer/pianist Uri Schreter\, performing their new settings of Yiddish and English poetry written in response to the pervasive climate of race prejudice that gave birth to the Scottsboro trials – and other injustices to come. \nThe event is part of the Stahl Center’s “Colors of Jewishness” series\, supported by Bader Philanthropies and the Ettinger Family Foundation. The event is cosponsored by Edot Midwest\, the UWM History Department\, the Department of African and African Diaspora Studies\, and the Division of Community Empowerment and Institutional Inclusivity.

We will be reading and discussing “Strange Hate: Antisemitism\, Racism and the Limits of Diversity\,” by Keith Kahn-Harris\, over the course of four sessions via zoom. Register at by Sept 18 at this webpage. \nA zoom link will be sent one week before the first session to those registered. A limited number of free copies of the book will be available. DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nWhat’s a Constitution For?\nPresented by Dr. Wendy Martinek\, Binghamton University (SUNY) \n  \nA constitution is a blueprint for government. It establishes the structures and processes of government. A constitution is also the embodiment of a set of principles. It reflects the political values of a nation. But\, really\, what is a constitution for? A constitution is for the people who are governed by it. It should serve their purposes and advance their interests. But constitutions need interpretation\, and judges are the key interpreters of constitutions. How do citizens engage with those judges\, and how do those judges engage with citizens? Whether through formal means (like Ireland’s referendum process for amending its constitution) or informal means (like Justice Sotomayor’s appearances on Sesame Street)\, citizens and judges communicate in numerous ways. \nDr. Wendy Martinek is a professor of political science at Binghamton University (SUNY)\, where she specializes in judicial politics and behavior. A proud alum of Lawrence University (BA 1990)\, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (MA 1995) and Michigan State University (PhD 2000)\, Dr. Martinek is a Wisconsin native.
