Distance learners may be adults juggling full-time work and family responsibilities or traditional-aged students \r\nwho find online courses the best solution to meet their educational needs.<\/p>\r\n
The online format requires a high level of self-motivation and better than average time management skills. \r\nOnline courses operate on the same semester-based schedule as in-person classes (the program is \r\nnot<\/strong> self-paced). Fall classes start the first week of September with finals in mid-December, \r\nand spring classes start the third week of January with finals in mid-May.<\/p>\r\n\r\n Online students take the same courses as traditional on-campus UWM students and are taught by the same faculty. \r\nThe courses are just delivered in a different format. If you are unable to locate the online major in the \r\ndrop-down list, contact undergraduateadmissions@uwm.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n Once admitted, students will work with an assigned advisor in the College of Letters & Science via phone or video. \r\nStudents will also have a faculty advisor to assist with the major-specific requirements.<\/p>\r\n *Application to the master\u2019s program would be through the \r\nUWM Graduate School<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n Most of our online courses do not have a set meeting period. These asynchronous<\/em> classes have weekly \r\nassignments, but a student can log in at any times during the week to complete the necessary tasks, whether that is \r\nwatching a video lecture, completing a quiz, turning in an assignment, etc.<\/p>\r\n Some online classes do have a set meeting period, and students enrolled in those classes must log in and attend \r\nclass at those set times. These are called synchronous<\/em> classes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n For the 2025-26 academic year, the undergraduate rate for fully online is $395 per credit.** There are no additional \r\ncampus fees, however, individual classes may have a fee associated with required course materials. Any individual \r\ncourse that has an additional fee will have that information in the schedule of classes so you can determine if you \r\nwish to take that particular class or not. Because students in the fully online pricing program do not pay segregated fees, \r\nthey do not have access to campus services such as the Klotsche Center, free tickets to sporting events, \r\nnor the Student Health and Wellness Center.<\/p>\r\n Students should carefully review the UWM tuition and fees schedules<\/a> to determine \r\nif they wish to opt into online program pricing. When viewing the standard Undergraduate Fee Schedule, be sure to read the footnotes and \r\nadd the Instructional Technology Fee. Students who find that standard tuition and fees is less expensive \r\nthan the online program pricing do not need to opt into online program pricing and can still just register for all \r\nonline courses.<\/p>\r\n For non-Wisconsin residents<\/strong>, the online program fee is generally the most cost-effective option, \r\nbut Wisconsin residents taking a large credit load <\/strong>(15 or more credits per semester) might find that \r\nstandard undergraduate tuition and fees (Undergraduate Fee Schedule) is more cost effective even when the Instructional Technology fee is added.<\/p>\r\n\r\n Current students can consult with their assigned advisor; prospective students can \r\ncontact let-sci@uwm.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n **The College of Letters & Science currently offers one fully online graduate program \r\nin Translation and Interpreting Studies which is $800 per credit. <\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n Incoming students for one of the eligible degree programs can select the fully online version on their application for admission. \r\nIf you have done that and were admitted to the online program, you do not need to opt-in and should have received a copy of the terms and conditions \r\nduring the admissions process. You can re-review those on the opt-in form<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n Undergraduates looking to move from standard program pricing to online program pricing should read the terms and conditions \r\non the opt-in form<\/a> and submit it. \r\nYou will be contacted when your request is reviewed.<\/p>\r\n If you are a graduate student in the Master\u2019s in Translation & Interpreting Studies (TIS) program, the joint MLIS\/TIS master\u2019s program, \r\nor the standalone graduate certificate in translation, contact your program advisor for the opt in form.<\/p>\r\n\r\n To receive online program pricing for Fall, UWinteriM, or the Spring semester, a student must be opted into the online plan by the \r\nFriday prior to the first day of classes. Due to the varying start \r\ndates of Summer sessions, students must be opted into the online plan by the Friday prior to the first day of classes of their first \r\nSummer session. <\/p>\r\n\r\n If you miss the deadline, you can switch to online program pricing for the following semester as long as you continue to meet the criteria of fully \r\nonline enrollment in an eligible program. Retroactive changes are not made, and your charges for the current semester will be based on the standard \r\ntuition and fees schedule.<\/p>\r\n\r\n If you have determined that online pricing is not the best option for you and you are currently in the online version \r\nof the major, you will need to opt out and switch to the standard version of the major.
