Juan Felipe Herrera, U.S. Poet Laureate

In June, the Library of Congress appointed writer Juan Felipe Herrera as the 21st Poet Laureate of the United States. Herrera visited UWM in Spring 2008, when English doctoral students Dawn Tefft and Dalia Gomaa (now alumni) interviewed him for cream city review (Volume 32.1).

This July 4, the Los Angeles Review of Books published David Tomas Martinez’s article “A Personal Laureate: Reflections on Juan Felipe Herrera’s Appointment as Poet Laureate of the United States” featuring commentaries by Carmen Gimenez Smith, who will be the Creative Writing Program’s Visiting Poet this coming fall, our own Brenda Cárdenas, and five other Latina/o poets.
