2025 Midwest Graduate Film and Media Studies Symposium
April 18–19, 2025 | University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Marquette University are excited to host the second annual Midwest Graduate Film and Media Studies Symposium, which brings together graduate scholars from across the region for lively discussion of film, media, and digital culture.
This year’s symposium—themed “Drawing (In)Attention”—explores media engagement, distraction, and the shifting dynamics of attention across historical and contemporary contexts. From the rapid pacing of social media to the immersive power of cinema, graduate student scholars will examine how media capture—and lose—our focus in an era where attention is increasingly fragmented and commodified.
The two-day symposium will feature a keynote address by Professor Neil Verma (Northwestern University), author of Narrative Podcasting in an Age of Obsession (University of Michigan Press, 2024). His talk, “Obsession: From Map to Strategy,” will take place on Friday, April 18th, from 7:00-8:30 PM in Mitchell Hall 195.
