End of semester events! Take a break from studying

Despite the fact that the winter is upon us and the end of the semester is just around the corner, we can still get out and enjoy local events and activities. Here are a list of events and activities going on in the English Language Academy, the UWM campus, and the local Milwaukee community in the month of December.

English Language Academy

Dec. 2nd & 9th – F2F Graduate conversation group

Don’t forget graduate students! We still have two more weeks of great conversation to be had before the end of the semester. Come join us in Curtin Hall 187 from 3:30pm – 4:20pm to relax, grab some snacks, and hang out with other grads on campus.

Dec. 4th & 11th – Talk! Undergraduate conversation group

For our undergraduate students! Come join us in Curtin 187 from 12:30pm – 1:20pm to hang out with other international undergrads for the first two Wednesdays of December for some great conversation and some snacks.

Dec. 13th – End of Semester Party (IEP students only)

Students in our Intensive English Program can come join us for bowling at Landmark Lanes on Friday, December 13th from 10:45am – 1pm. Meet us in the Curtin Hall lobby at 10am to take the city bus with your teachers. There will be an awards ceremony, and we will be hosting a potluck! So, bring a dish to share. UWM Campus

This month, UWM CAB and other campus groups have some activities to help you relax as final projects and assignments are due and end of semester exams are coming up. Chill out with these activities below.

Dec. 4th – Lyrical Sanctuary

Come hang out and relax with some spoken word in the Union Fireside Lounge from 8pm – 10pm, and at this December’s lyrical sanctuary, you can make a positive impact on the Milwaukee community. Bring canned goods and personal care and hygiene products to donate. All items will be given to the UWM Food Pantry and the Sojourner Family Peace Center to help out local students and community members in need. What a great way to enjoy an artistic evening and give back to the community!

Dec. 6 – Spire Fitness Cycling Class Excursion

Join CAB for a FREE cycling class at Spire Fitness. Releasing some endorphins through exercise will help you relax and help with your focus. Registration begins at 9am in the Union Concourse on a first come, first serve basis.

Dec. 10th – CAB & Hot Cocoa

Take a study break by joining CAB in the UWM library for FREE hot cocoa and cookies from 1:00pm – 5:00pm.

Dec. 12th – Panther Pause

It’s easy to get stressed out at the end of the semester, but making sure to take a pause will ensure that you sail through the rest of your semester studies. Join CAB for Panther Pause from 11:00am – 3:00pm in the Union Ballroom. Make sure to bring your student ID so that you can refresh and relax with crafts, snacks, yoga, and more for FREE.

Dec. 12th – Moonlight Meditation

Join both the Planetarium Club and the Meditation Group at UWM for a nice hour of guided meditation under the stars. This event takes place from 4:00pm – 5:00pm in the Physics building room 139. This event is FREE for all UWM students.

Milwaukee Community

Dec. 5th – Westown Gets Lit

Join the Westown Community in the plaza at 310 W. Wisconsin Ave. from 4:30pm – 6:30pm to help count down to lights on, which is a holiday seasonal tradition in the U.S. There will be free cookies, s’mores, and more with entertainment from carolers and a DJ.

Dec. 6th – Christmas in the Ward

Kick off the beginning of the Christmas season with Christmas in the Ward presented by PNC. Enjoy some fireworks, tree lightning, Santa, live music, and live reindeer in the Third Ward from 5:30pm – 8:30pm.

Dec. 6th & 7th – MIAD Holiday Sale

Do you want to join in the U.S. holiday seasonal tradition of gift giving and to help support local artists? the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design is hosting their annual Holiday Sale. You can buy local art of all mediums (paintings, sculptures, furniture, jewelry, handbags, ceramics, and more) to find that perfect gift for a friend or family member, made by a local MIAD student.

Dec. 6th & 7th – Historical Society Annual Book Sale

Any history buffs out there? The local Historical Society is hosting a book sale, come check out and purchase discontinued titles and historical books and magazines from 1pm – 5pm on Friday, Dec. 6th and 10am – 4:00pm on Saturday, Dec. 7th.

Dec. 7th & 8th – Milwaukee Hmong New Year

The great thing about having as diverse of a community as Milwaukee is that there are always opportunities to explore and learn about other cultures and heritages. Learn a bit more about Milwaukee’s large Hmong community by attending the Hmong New Year festival and celebration at the Exposition Center at the Wisconsin State Fair Park. Entrance is only $5, and there will be traditional Hmong costumes, music, delicious food, and a Hmong marketplace.

Dec. 14th & 15th – Pfister Holiday Marketplace

Still looking for the perfect gift for a good friend or family member in this giving season? More local artisans will be posting up at the Pfister Hotel lobby on Dec. 14th & 15th. Come check out local artists and vendors in the beautiful holiday ambiance.
