For a group of students in the college, it ended with a national award \u2013 and plenty of sparks flying along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eleven students forming three teams represented UWM in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.castinsteel.net\/copy-of-2026-competition\">Cast in Steel Competition<\/a>, in Grand Rapids, Mich., where they earned a cash prize in one of the six categories, the award for \u201cBest Investment Casting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-slider uwm-p-slider--dots-outside\"><div class=\"uwm-p-slider--base\"><figure class=\"uwm-c-img--caption-gray\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/537\/2026\/05\/Axe.Molds_.jpg\" alt=\"Red hot molds made of ceramic emerge from the casting furnance.\" title=\"Red hot molds made of ceramic emerge from the casting furnance.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><figcaption>The molds of the design show the red-hot outer coating of a ceramic slurry. Success depended on more than just making an impressive-looking tool \u2013 teams had to create an axe that could withstand demanding mechanical tests while showcasing precise manufacturing techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preparation for the competition began in September 2025. Over months of work, students from both the Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science &amp; Engineering departments, developed designs and ran simulations. They decided to use investment casting \u2013 a highly detailed manufacturing process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-investment-casting\"><strong>What is investment casting?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In investment casting, a mold of the product is made by first creating the design in wax and then coating the outside several times with a ceramic slurry until you get the right thickness, said team member Carol Martinez, a senior in materials science &amp; engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In the process, you melt out that the internal wax and then pour in the molten metal into the cavity that&#8217;s left,&#8221; Martinez said. &#8220;It&#8217;s called &#8216;investment&#8217; because it takes a longer time than sand-casting. But we were thinking about the surface finish of our part.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sandcasting can give you a rough surface finish that would then have to be smoothed with machining afterward, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-partners-with-industry\"><strong>Partners with industry<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To bring their designs to life, the UWM students partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metaltek.com\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">MetalTek International<\/a> in Watertown, Wis., which has experience with investment casting and helped the team achieve the precision and finish they were aiming for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the competition, students not only tested their axes but also networked with industry professionals and observed a wide range of metal casting technologies in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They were showing more than technical skill,&#8221; said faculty advisor Ben Church, associate professor, materials science &amp; engineering. &#8220;They exhibited teamwork, persistence, and the kind of hands-on experience that allows them to apply classroom concepts.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team also thanks the UWM Prototyping Center and ThermTech in Waukesha for supporting the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What happens when engineering students spend months designing a steel axe, then put it to the test against teams from across the country?
