(Photo by Alvin Connor, Milwaukee Public Schools)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Twenty-one high school students from Milwaukee Public Schools proudly displayed the plaza enhancements they completed at the Beerline Pavilion in the Riverwest neighborhood in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its third year, this design and build \u201cplacemaking\u201d camp is a collaboration among the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/engineering\/\">UWM College of Engineering &amp; Applied Science<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/community-design-solutions\/\">Community Design Solutions (CDS)<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/sarup\/\">UWM School of Architecture &amp; Urban Planning<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.riverworksmke.org\/\">Riverworks Development Corporation<\/a>. Participating students get to explore various building careers while still in high school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students\u2019 work expanded a previous year\u2019s collaboration to create a plaza along the Beerline Trail that could be used as a place for the community to gather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elizabeth Young, a junior in civil engineering, and Danya Almoghrabi, a recent master\u2019s graduate of architecture, joined the team of mentors, teaching MPS students such marketable skills as woodworking, landscaping, welding and storm water control strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJust think of what you can do now, after the work you&#8217;ve done in this camp,\u201d Brett Peters, dean of the College of Engineering &amp; Applied Science, told the gathering at the June 14 reveal event. \u201cAs you plan for your careers, we want to continue our engagement with you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The camp gives students a wider view of what engineers and architects do, said Chris Beimborn, STEM-outreach specialist&nbsp;for the College of Engineering &amp; Applied Science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel most proud about the way the students collaborate and support each other,\u201d Beimborn said. \u201cI hope that they will have this group of like-minded peers as a source of motivation going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAside from just learning skills, students gain a sense of power and efficacy in this camp,\u201d said Krisann Rehbein, director of CDS. \u201cWorking collaboratively and using the wisdom and skills they already have to make our city a little bit better is an incredible&nbsp;accomplishment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other partners included the <a href=\"https:\/\/mps.milwaukee.k12.wi.us\/en\/Community\/Get-Involved\/MPS-Foundation.htm\">Milwaukee Public Schools Foundation<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.give.uwm.edu\/s\/1902\/m19\/interior-dev.aspx?sid=1902&amp;gid=3&amp;pgid=1662&amp;cid=4175&amp;ecid=4175&amp;crid=0&amp;calpgid=689&amp;calcid=2636\">Fund for Diversity in Tech Education at UWM<\/a>, a gift from UWM engineering alumnus Satya Nadella (\u201990 MS computer science) and Anu Nadella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See the whole photo gallery.<a href=\"https:\/\/havonestudios.shootproof.com\/gallery\/24809711\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/havonestudios.shootproof.com\/gallery\/24809711<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Twenty-one high school students from Milwaukee Public Schools proudly displayed the plaza enhancements they completed at the Beerline Pavilion in the Riverwest neighborhood in June.
