College of Engineering & Applied Science Summer Math Prep Program
The College of Engineering & Applied Science (CEAS) Summer Math Prep Program is an online tool that you can utilize to assess and enhance your math skills prior to retaking your math placement test. We strongly encourage anyone who received a letter regarding the College of Engineering & Applied Science Summer Math Prep Program to utilize this opportunity to prepare for a retest with the hope of earning a higher math placement.
What does your placement mean? You received the invitation because when you took the UW System placement test you placed at a level lower than Calculus 1. Calculus 1 is the first required course in the engineering curriculum.
Why should you retest? A placement prior to Calculus 1 may prevent you from enrolling in Engineering and Computer Science major-specific courses in the fall. This placement will require you to take additional courses that are prerequisite courses to your major courses. Additionally, testing at a level prior to Math 231-Calculus 1 has the potential to delay the time of completion for your degree.
If you received an Engineering Excellence Scholarship, the scholarship requires recipients to enroll in Math 231 (Calculus 1) or higher by Fall 2018. Therefore, your current placement exam results disqualify you from receiving the scholarship.
How does the College of Engineering & Applied Science Summer Math Prep Program Work? The College of Engineering & Applied Science Summer Math Prep Program is completed through an online, self-paced program called ALEKS. After you complete the online registration, you will take an online math assessment. This assessment will direct you to the areas where you need to improve. You will be provided with online review materials and practice problems to strengthen your skill set. Because the program is online, you can begin the program when it is convenient for you but we recommend starting the testing portion of the program before Friday, June 15, 2018 to allow enough time to prepare before retesting.

How do I retest? The College of Engineering & Applied Science Summer Math Prep Program offers several UW System retest dates in early August. Participants are required to come to UW-Milwaukee to take a retest.
To sign up for test:
Visit uwm.edu/testregistration and log in with your epanther ID/password
Once you are logged in, click the (+) sign next to ‘Placement’ from the list of tests offered
Register for one of the following test times and choose Math as the test you would like to take:

How do AP credits factor into your math placement scores? AP scores may allow you to take Calculus in fall 2018. A score of a 4 or 5 on the Calculus AB test will allow you to register for Calculus 2 in Fall 2018. A score of a 4 or 5 on the Calculus BC test will allow you to register for Calculus 3 in Fall 2018. Many AP test results are not available until July 2018.
Will this affect your attendance at New Student Orientation (NSO)? No! Please register and attend your NSO as soon as you are eligible. You will have the opportunity to change your math course after NSO if you place higher when you retest.
