The program is approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Students are trained to apply the principles of learning, human development, counseling, research and measurement within the schools. Certification is available as a K-12 School Counselor and as a Bilingual Counselor. Please note that summer enrollment is required and, although most courses are in-person, some are offered online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-u-flex uwm-u-flex--wrap uwm-u-flex--left\">\n<a class=\"uwm-c-button uwm-c-button--outline uwm-u-mr-20 uwm-u-mb-20\" href=\"https:\/\/catalog.uwm.edu\/community-engagement-professions\/education\/educational-psychology\/educational-psychology-school-counseling-ms\/#requirementstext\" rel=\"\">View Requirements<\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To request access to syllabi from previous semesters, please contact <a href=\"mailto:soeinfo@uwm.edu\">soeinfo@uwm.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Students wishing to be licensed as a school counselor in another state should consult that state\u2019s licensing requirements to ensure that they are meeting the requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Effective Sept. 2021 for students graduating in May 2022 or later, students in dual certification must take BOTH capstone exams for each concentration (Praxis 2 AND CPCE).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"tab-qsvn-admission\" class=\"uwm-p-tabcontent--pane\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-application-process\">Application Process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/applygrad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">applications<\/a> must be completed online through the UW-Milwaukee Graduate School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Priority Deadline<\/strong>: Admission to the Educational Psychology: School Counseling MS program is competitive and limited, we recommend completing applications by <strong>Nov. 15<\/strong> for admission the following Fall.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Final Deadline<\/strong>: Final application deadline is<strong>&nbsp;Feb. 1<\/strong>&nbsp;for Fall admission. Please note that this date is firm, despite the Graduate School\u2019s application \u201clock date.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content_block\" id=\"custom_post_widget-10352\">\n<p><div class=\"uwm-p-notice uwm-p-notice--slim\"><br>    <i class=\"fa-solid fa-info-circle fa-fw\"><\/i><br>    <div class=\"uwm-p-notice--content\"><span style=\"font-size: 0.875rem\">For programs regulated by the Department of Public Instruction, a baccalaureate degree, from an accredited college or university is required.<\/span><\/div><br><\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-required-materials-for-application\">Required Materials for Application<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduateschool\/students\/admission\/\">minimum requirements for admission<\/a>&nbsp;stipulated by the UWM Graduate School, the Educational Psychology MS \u2013 Concentration in School Counseling program also requires:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of&nbsp;<strong>3.0<\/strong>&nbsp;(vs. 2.75 required by the graduate school) on a 4.0 scale. Those whose undergraduate GPA is below 3.0 must provide evidence of ability to succeed in graduate study through at least one of the following:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>GPA of at least 3.0 during the last two years of the baccalaureate program (calculated on a minimum of 48 credits).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A graduate degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submission of official score reports from the Graduate Record Examination, the Graduate Management Admission Test or the Miller Analogies Test that indicate competencies in areas related to the proposed graduate program. To be considered official, these scores must be sent directly from the testing agency to UWM and must be received prior to admission.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Depending on the applicant pool, some applicants may be admitted who do not meet the required GPA. Please see stipulations under the Admission Procedures section of this document.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3 Letters of Recommendation:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Letters that speak to your scholarly capabilities are desirable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Letters submitted on letterhead are preferred<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Letters must be submitted through the application\u2019s electronic recommendation feature by the recommenders themselves. (Recommenders receive an email with a link to upload their letter directly to your application when you submit the request in the application.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Letters uploaded or sent by the applicant will not be accepted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reasons statement. A 1-2 page statement that includes your long-term goals and reasons for seeking a counseling degree.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Note<\/strong>: Although not required, it is strongly recommended that you upload a resume or curriculum vita.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This document must be uploaded to the Additional Resources section of your application.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>GRE scores are not required, though you are welcome to submit your scores if you wish to do so.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Additional requirement<\/strong>: After applications are reviewed by the program, those recommended for admission to the&nbsp;master&#8217;s in <strong>School Counseling Concentration<\/strong>&nbsp;will also need to submit a&nbsp;<strong>criminal background check<\/strong>. This is a requirement for all who intend to pursue K-12 licensure through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Instructions for completing the criminal background check will be sent after the initial review is complete. Assuming the background check is completed and passed, the department will forward the admission recommendation to the Graduate School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The department must receive all materials by the Final Deadline of Feb. 1.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>School Counseling applicants who are recommended for admission will be contacted about submitting the criminal background check at this time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Counseling Admissions Committee carefully reviews the following information as part of the decision-making process for recommending admission for students to graduate school: GPA, letters of recommendation and the applicant\u2019s statement on the reason statement from the Application Questions section of your application. Applicants are urged to take special care in describing long range goals, how they see themselves fitting into UWM\u2019s program, which has an urban and multicultural emphasis, and relating experiences which influenced their decision to pursue counseling.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Note:<\/strong>&nbsp;Admission to the MS School Counseling Program is competitive. Admission decisions are based on the applicant\u2019s academic records, breadth of experience, recommendations and career goals. Admission decisions are also governed by the number of qualified applicants and course offerings and\/or availability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Depending on the applicant pool, applicants who do not meet the Department undergraduate grade point average of 3.0&nbsp;<em><strong>may<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;be allowed to provide additional proof of admissibility. Applicants considered for admission must have the following (note that these standards are different than the Graduate School\u2019s general requirements):<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Undergraduate GPA between 2.75 \u2013 2.99: May be admitted on department recommendation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Undergraduate GPA between 2.50&nbsp;\u2013 2.74: Must submit evidence of&nbsp;<em><strong>one<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;of the following to be&nbsp;<em><strong>considered<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;for admission:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>GPA of at least 3.0 during the last two years of the baccalaureate program (calculated on a minimum of 48 credits).&nbsp;<strong>OR<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evidence of an advanced degree (GPA 3.0 or better).&nbsp;<strong>OR<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submission of Graduate Record Examination or Miller Analogies Test scores, which indicate high probability of success in graduate school.&nbsp;<strong>OR<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Completion of six credits of&nbsp;<em><strong>approved coursework*<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;as a non-degree student with a grade of B or better (B- grades are not acceptable).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Undergraduate GPA below 2.5: Normally not admitted but to be considered,&nbsp;<em><strong>two or more<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;of the items listed under section 2 above are required. And,&nbsp;<em><strong>nine<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;credits of&nbsp;<em><strong>approved coursework*<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;as a non-degree student with a grade of B or better (B- grades are not acceptable) are required.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>* Approved coursework for applicants requiring additional evidence of admissibility:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ED PSY 624 Educational Statistical Methods 1<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ED PSY 640 Human Development: Theory &amp; Research<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>COUNS 600 Introduction to Clinical Mental Health Counseling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>COUNS 602 Introduction to School Counseling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Note:<\/strong>&nbsp;All other counseling courses (those courses with the&nbsp;<em><strong>COUNS<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;prefix)&nbsp;<em><strong>cannot<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;be taken as coursework to show additional evidence of admissibility.
