SUMMARY:Exclusive Screening of The Right to Read
DESCRIPTION:The Tommy G. Thompson Center on Public Leadership is pleased to announce the exclusive screening of the film The Right to Read\, airing at the UW-Milwaukee Student Union Cinema on Wednesday\, May 17\, 2023. Doors open at 6:00 pm and program begins at 6:30 pm. \nThe Right to Read shares the stories of an activist\, a teacher\, and two American families who fight to provide our youngest generation with the most foundational indicator of life-long success: the ability to read. \nWhen a child can’t read\, their chances of incarceration\, homelessness\, and unemployment increase. That’s why Oakland-based NAACP activist Kareem Weaver believes literacy is one of the greatest civil rights issues of our time and is fighting for better reading instruction. “What good is winning the right to vote if we can’t even read the ballot?” Fed up with the bleak reading scores in his own community\, Kareem files a petition with the Oakland Unified School District demanding change. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Register today as seating is limited. \nThis event is sponsored by the Tommy G. Thompson Center on Public Leadership.

SUMMARY:PIECE Fall Speaker Series Session 1
DESCRIPTION:Save the Date!\nLearn more this fall about becoming an inclusive early childhood educator! This online speaker series will help prepare you to become an educator who honors the richness related to culture\, race\, language\, gender\, socioeconomic status\, ability\, conditions of learning\, and life circumstances of young children. Learn to build environments that celebrate the diversity of young children and make learning accessible for all. \nSession 1\nSpeaker: Meghan L. Green\, EdD \nDate/Time: Saturday\, September 9 from 9:00 to 11:00 am \nTitle of Presentation: Rooted in Testimonio and Sankofa: Utilizing Community Storying with Multiethnic and Multilingual Families \nSummary: Community cultural wealth refers to the various forms of knowledge\, skills\, and resources that exist within Communities of Color (Yosso\, 2005). It maintains that Communities of Color possess rich cultural assets that can contribute to our well-being and collective success. Recognizing and valuing community cultural wealth is important for culturally sustainable and inclusive early childhood educators as it highlights the expertise and assets that exist within Communities of Color (Flores & Springer\, 2021). During this session\, teacher candidates will explore strategies for leveraging and building upon these cultural wealth resources through rich\, culturally sustainable literacy practices such as community storying and family journey stories. We will examine how our lived experiences offer entry provocations into our origin stories and how we can infuse storying into our authentic engagement with multiethnic and multilingual families and communities. \nFor more information about the PIECE Fall Speaker Series\, contact uw-milwaukeepiece2022@uwm.edu. \nEvent Registration\nRegistration for this event has closed.

\nSession 2\nSpeaker: Sandra Lucia Osorio\, PhD \nDate/Time: Saturday\, October 7 from 9:00 to 11:00 am \nTitle of Presentation: Expansive View of Multilingualism: How to Bring Black Language\, Bidialectalism\, and Translanguaging in the Classroom Space \nSummary: Children come into the classroom with a wealth of knowledge that many times include multiple languages. This presentation calls for a more linguistically expansive orientation in classrooms that invites educators to move beyond language separation and the use of a “standard” English language. Therefore\, making space for and affirming students’ dynamic languaging and dynamically lingual identities. By “expansive” we refer to widening what is treated as acceptable language for schooling. Expansive language ideologies recognize context-specific uses and the power of knowing that many acceptable language types serve diverse purposes\, especially in a 21st-century\, diverse\, globalized\, and technologically mediated world. \nFor more information about the PIECE Fall Speaker Series\, contact uw-milwaukeepiece2022@uwm.edu. \nEvent Registration\nRegistration for this event has closed.

\nSession 3\nSpeaker: Lilly Padía\, PhD \nDate/Time: Saturday\, October 28 from 9:00 to 11:00 am \nTitle of Presentation: “Children Have Their Own Ways of Knowing Each Other”: Learning from Nonspoken Communication of Young Bilingual Children \nSummary: This session introduces strategies and frameworks for educators to “listen” to and learn from the nonverbal communication practices and systems that children create and utilize. Drawing on an ethnographic study with nonspeaking bilingual children\, their families\, and their educators\, we will identify nonverbal\, multimodal languaging practices as pathways for educators to honor and uplift expansive communication in classroom environments. This session turns the lens on the educator as a perception partner to expand our own capacities to perceive the multiple ways that children express and share meaning with each other and with their teachers. We will look at examples from nonspeaking children labeled as disabled and identify how these communication practices–on the part of children and teachers–create a liberatory languaging space for us all. \nFor more information about the PIECE Fall Speaker Series\, contact uw-milwaukeepiece2022@uwm.edu. \nEvent Registration\nRegistration for this event has closed.
