This past week I had regular monthly meetings with the Deans.

Bi-weekly Leadership Meeting

On Tuesday morning, we held the last of the summer bi-weekly leadership meetings. We reviewed the program coordinator roles and responsibilities. The chairs were asked to share this with their departments to get feedback. Afterwards, we reviewed the process and structure for administrative decision-making from department to Dean’s levels.

Staff Advisory Committee Meeting

The staff advisory committee met on Thursday morning. Tyree Bolden chaired the meeting. First, Tyree started with a new check-in, which was fun to learn about people. Afterwards, I gave an update on our enrollments and the work we have been doing during the summer. I also suggested to the group that they review and possibly amend the By-Laws as things have changed since these By-Laws were passed three years ago. For example, there is no BATO, so there is no BATO representative as stipulated in the old By-Laws. The group will be taking this up this year.

The next thing was to share information on new staff updates. This was followed by a discussion on selecting the next vice-chair to assist Tyree and then become the chair next year. Peggy Kuhnz brought forth an issue of how we might better on-board and support new staff members. The group had a nice exchange of ideas. Afterwards, Tyree asked for ideas for staff professional development. One idea involving Pop-up PD with empathy seem to get widespread support, so Tyree is going to investigate this for April 2020.

The group briefly discussed dates and times for their monthly meeting. To end the meeting, everyone was charged with recruiting new members to the committee as Sarah Osborne, Allee Hochmuth and Dario Elia are rotating off the committee and will need to be replaced starting with the September All Staff meeting on Thursday, September 12th from 12:00 to 1:00 pm in the Library 4th floor conference room. The continuing members are Tyree Bolden (chair), Peggy Kuhnz, and Krissy Lize.

Bradley Tech Commission Meeting

On Friday afternoon, I attended the Bradley Tech Commission meeting. It was our first meeting since May. The first thing we did was conduct elections for the chair, vice-chair, secretary, and treasurer. Vicki Martin, Mark Ernst, Beth Schultz, and Julia Taylor were elected for their respective positions. Next the commission members decided to meet bi-monthly rather than monthly for the upcoming year.

The various committees gave reports on their work before the Principal Aaron Shapiro gave his report. He mentioned several times the ACCESS grant and Bradley Tech’s involvement. Aaron also shared that Bradley Tech has enrolled 1339 students for this year, but he says they typically have a 30% no shows (similar to college students who apply to multiple universities prior to selecting one), so they are anticipating around 1000 students, which would be an 10% increase from the 900 they had last year. The principal also reported he has two new assistant principals. He is laser focused on reading and math improvement and I fully anticipate he will be able to improve student achievement unlike his predecessors. As I have shared with others, when you interact with Aaron, you can sense he is a true instructional leader and understands what it takes to move the academic needle forward.

I thought I would share something you may already know, but I recently discovered during my summer vacation. By October 1, 2020, if you use your driver’s license to travel and go through TSA at the airport, you MUST have the new REAL ID Driver’s license with the Star in the top right-hand corner. Here is more information regarding how to renew your Wisconsin driver’s license.
