WEEKLY ACTIVITIES

This week I had regular meetings with Hope Longwell-Grice and Jackie Nguyen, and Carol Wacker.

Panther Prowl

Thanks to Kerry Korinek for organizing the EdHeads and everyone who participated in the Panther Prowl. The team raised $920 as of October 19th. You can still make donations through Monday, 10/22, by clicking on a teammate at https://uwm.edu/pantherprowl/pledge-status-individual/?e=113373&t=1&i=27840 and then “GIVE NOW.”

Pi Lambda Theta Induction Ceremony

On Monday, October 15th, the School of Education hosted the 55th anniversary induction ceremony for Pi Lambda Theta. Pi Lambda Theta is the most selective honor society in Education, open to graduate and undergraduate students who have earned a 3.5 gpa or higher. The UWM chapter held its first induction in May of 1963 and has inducted over 1,000 students to date.

In addition to inducting the 55th class on October 15th, the organization paid tribute to one of its founding members, Barbara J. Michaels. Over 120 students, staff, faculty, and past PLT members attended the celebration. Additionally, funds were raised to support the Lura Carrithers scholarship at UWM. For more information on PLT, please contact Rob Longwell-Grice, chapter advisor.

CADREI Conference

From Monday through Wednesday, I was in Tucson, Arizona attending the Council of Academic Deans from Research Education Institutions (CADREI) meeting. I interacted with former UWM faculty and Associate Deans like Wanda Blanchett, Dave Edyburn, and Cindy Walker. Wanda is currently serving as the Interim Provost at Rutgers University.

Education Deans of Greater Milwaukee Meeting

On Friday morning, I attended the EDGM meeting at Wisconsin Lutheran. We de-briefed the Celebration of Teachers and Teaching Event at Cardinal Stritch. I want to thank Angel Hessel for being our point person to the steering committee. Next year, Concordia University will be hosting the event with a theme of 21st Century Skills. There was subsequent discussion about the DPI Fall Institute and the changes to PI-34. The last item was to announce that David Brightsman from Wisconsin Lutheran will be replacing Bill Henk from Marquette as the new co-chair for the group.

Advancing Wellness at Westlawn

On Friday afternoon I met with Laura Lynn Hermanns from the College of Nursing to learn more about a wellness initiative at their Westlawn facility off of Silver Springs. They are looking for partners to contribute in any way towards wellness and improving the community’s quality of life.

AN ANNOUNCEMENT FROM DR. TOM BASKIN FROM EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY

I wanted to let everyone know that Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease has caused me to medically retire from UWM. I joined the Department of Educational Psychology at an exciting time, the same year as Chancellor Carlos Santiago and Azara Santiago-Rivera. We had great plans to make a salient shift in expanding the research mission of the department and campus – a mission that I entirely supported. Unfortunately, catastrophic issues around the budget has put untold pressure on this mission. However, in the midst of this pressure, it is clear that the UWM faculty are among the best in the world. They did an amazing job of listening to my struggles, and of treating me like family. I will miss being a part of such a caring faculty. I will also miss working with so many kind students, who are so eager to learn. Take care!

DO YOU USE FLIPGRID?

As the university is transitioning to Canvas, other instructional technology programs are being impacted. Currently, Flipgrid is being evaluated. We have been asked to find out how many instructors are using Flipgrid in their teaching. If you use it now or will be using it in future semesters, please contact Dario Elia at ddelia@uwm.edu by Friday October 26.
