This week I had regular monthly meetings with Liz Drame and Carol Wacker.

Deans and Chairs Meeting

Tuesday morning, the Deans and Chairs met. I provided an update on our summer meetings. The Deans and Chairs are going to meet July 18th and August 15th. I also gave the chairs a list of 5 things to work on this summer including: 1) Unfunded course buyouts; 2) Following up with the V&R work; 3) Looking at summer compensation for chairs; 4) Work with Hope and Jeremy on the retention committee; and 5) Draft faculty expectation norms to get feedback from faculty in the fall and adopt soon afterwards. The rest of the meeting was devoted to the Provost sharing his thoughts on position requests and the school restructuring effort.

Board of Visitors Meeting

On Thursday morning, I held a Board of Visitors meeting at Brown Deer School District where Superintendent Deb Kerr had offered to host. Nadya Fouad shared the work of Educational Psychology department. The BOV members were very supportive and impressed by what Nadya shared. Afterwards, Kallie Rank, an undergraduate student who graduated on Sunday in the ASL/ITP program shared her experiences with the Board of Visitors and they enjoyed hearing about Kallie’s passion for interpreting. I gave a budget update along with an update on the Call Me Mister program. I also shared that I have invited two new members to replace the three departures. They are Mark Sain, MPS School Board President and Alfonso Carmona, Superintendent of St. Augustine’s Preparatory School.

With the support of the Provost, I am creating a research incentive fund. Further details will become available this coming fall semester for anticipated implementation for the spring 2018 semester. I am charging the Research Committee to develop submission requirements, appropriate criteria and outcomes, and a process for making recommendations to me for final decisions. The funds will be used to support research endeavors that produce tangible outcomes like publications in top tier journals (as defined by an independent metrics/sources), books published by highly reputable publishers or professional organizations, or preparation of large federal or foundation research grants. Specifically, funds will be used to provide course releases to support these research endeavors.

Please support the Randy Goree Scholarship Fund and/or the Extra Help Fund. The Randy Goree: Scholarship Fund is for first-generation teacher education students who have an interest in history and/or citizenship. The Extra Help Fund is for students who face unforeseen challenges that prevent them from graduating. A donor is matching all gifts (for a total of $50,000). We are $15,000 away from making this fund permanent. Please contact Carol Wacker if you are interested in donating to one of the new scholarship funds.
