It is inevitable to seek alternative sources of water, such as recycled water and agricultural return flows, to guarantee food and water security. However, poorly monitored recycled water and return flows can transmit waterborne diseases to consumers. To address this need, <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/engineering\/people\/cheng-qingsu\/\">Prof Cheng<\/a> is developing C60 probes that target 16S rRNA sequence for identification with microchips that multiplex the tests. <a href=\"http:\/\/portal.nifa.usda.gov\/web\/crisprojectpages\/1032270-integration-of-onsite-monitoring-and-treatment-of-waterborne-pathogens-for-agriculture-return-flow-and-recycle-wastewater.html\">This work<\/a> is supported by the USDA for the period of three years and conducted in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/biomedical-sciences-healthcare-administration\/directory\/skwor-troy\/\">Prof. Skwor<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignleft uwm-c-img--left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/drug-discovery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/390\/2023\/08\/Qingsu-Cheng-201x300.png\" alt=\"Professor Cheng headshot\" class=\"wp-image-988\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/drug-discovery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/390\/2023\/08\/Qingsu-Cheng-201x300.png 201w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/drug-discovery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/390\/2023\/08\/Qingsu-Cheng.png 234w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In detail, the <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.uwm.edu\/cathmnnb\/\">Cheng Group<\/a> will receive biospecimens from farms and water treatment plants to develop C60 probes for waterborne pathogens, develop and validate microchips for multiplexing waterborne pathogens, and validate novel efficient methods for sterilization.
