Students participating in the semester, academic year, summer or UWinteriM study abroad programs may be awarded up to $5,000 with a study abroad diversity scholarship.

This funding aims to support students who have been traditionally underrepresented in studying abroad. Individuals from one or more of the following groups may apply: (1) first-generation college students; (2) students who have barriers to studying abroad such as a high level of financial need or who have experienced barriers in pursuing higher education; or (3) students who have not previously had an opportunity to travel abroad. This scholarship reflects UWM’s commitment to expanding the diversity of students participating in education abroad programs.

Applicants must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Be from a group mentioned above.
  • Be a full-time, degree-seeking UWM student in good standing.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Receive post-application acceptance into an approved study abroad program during the specified terms listed above.
  • Attend and participate in the program indicated in the application. Should a selected recipient withdraw from the program before departure, he or she will not receive the scholarship funds.

See the UWM scholarship portal for the most current information on eligibility requirements, required application materials, actual application deadlines, selection criteria and post-trip requirements.

Submit the application form along with required materials (essay and letter of recommendation) to the Center for International Education Study Abroad Office in Pearse 166 by 4:30 p.m. of the deadline date.
