Join your colleagues for a series of book club discussions about Whistling Vivaldi: How stereotypes affect us and what we can do by Claude M. Steele. The acclaimed social psychologist offers an insider’s look at his research and groundbreaking findings on stereotypes and identity.

Claude M. Steele, who has been called “one of the few great social psychologists,” offers a vivid first-person account of the research that supports his groundbreaking conclusions on stereotypes and identity. He sheds new light on American social phenomena from racial and gender gaps in test scores to the belief in the superior athletic prowess of black men and lays out a plan for mitigating these “stereotype threats” and reshaping American identities.

The discussion group meets on alternate Wednesdays at 9am on 9/21, 10/5, 10/19, 11/2, 11/16, and 11/30 for an hour (via Teams; click on the links below). There is no registration.

You are responsible for securing a copy of the book. Come discuss what you have read or to participate in the discussion even if you did not have a chance to read a particular chapter!

Suzanne Boyd and Liz Drame will co-facilitate the discussions. We will discuss a couple of chapters of the book at each session, as well as implications for our own professional and instructional practices.  For questions, contact the co-facilitators at sboyd@uwm.edu or erdrame@uwm.edu.
