{"id":127,"date":"2024-12-11T11:39:05","date_gmt":"2024-12-11T17:39:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/academic-misconduct\/"},"modified":"2026-04-13T09:47:28","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T14:47:28","slug":"academic-misconduct","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/conduct\/academic-misconduct\/","title":{"rendered":"Academic Misconduct"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"uwm-u-py-80\"><div class=\"uwm-l-container--base uwm-l-container--overflow-hidden\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-row\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\"><header class=\"page-header\"><h1 class=\"entry-title heading-separator\">Academic Misconduct<\/h1><\/header>\n\n\n<p>The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) defines academic misconduct as any action by a student to falsely claim credit for someone else&#8217;s work, use unauthorized materials, fabricate data, forge academic documents, impede others&#8217; academic work, misrepresent academic performance, or assist others in such acts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col uwm-l-col--4 uwm-l-offset--1\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-buttons--full\">\n<a class=\"uwm-c-button uwm-c-button--full uwm-u-mb-20\" href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/faculty-staff-resources\/academic-misconduct-for-instructors\/\" rel=\"\">Instructor Academic Misconduct<\/a>\n\n\n\n<a class=\"uwm-c-button uwm-c-button--full uwm-u-mb-20\" href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduateschool\/students\/academic-policies-and-procedures\/academic-misconduct\/\" rel=\"\">Graduate School Academic Misconduct<\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-block-otp-nav \"><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"uwm-bg-gray uwm-u-py-80\"><div class=\"uwm-l-container--base uwm-l-container--overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading heading-separator\" id=\"h-academic-misconduct-overview\">Academic Misconduct Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Student academic misconduct procedures are specified in Chapter UWS 14 and the UWM implementation provisions (Faculty Document 1686). A combined set of these UW System and UWM procedures is below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/code\/admin_code\/uws\/14\/\">UWS Chapter 14 Procedures<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-academic-misconduct-is-an-act-in-which-a-student\">Academic misconduct is an act in which a student:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>seeks to claim credit for the work or efforts of another without authorization or citation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>uses unauthorized materials or fabricated data in any academic exercise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>forges or falsifies academic documents or records<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>intentionally impedes or damages the academic work of others<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>engages in conduct aimed at making false representation of a student\u2019s academic performance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>assists other students in any of these acts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-prohibited-conduct-includes-but-is-not-limited-to\"><strong>Prohibited conduct includes but is not limited to:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>cheating on an examination and\/or assignment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>collaborating with others in work to be presented<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>contrary to the stated rules of the course<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>submitting a paper or assignment as one\u2019s own work when a part or all of the paper or assignment is the work of another<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>utilizing&nbsp;Artificial Intelligence&nbsp;technology such as&nbsp;ChatGPT&nbsp;on an assignment without authorization or citation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>submitting a paper or assignment that contains ideas or research of others without appropriately identifying the sources of those ideas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>stealing examinations or course materials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>submitting, if contrary to the rules of a course, work previously presented in another course;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tampering with the laboratory experiment or computer program of another student<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>knowingly and intentionally assisting another student in any of the above including:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>including assistance in an arrangement whereby any work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>classroom performance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>examination or other activity is submitted or performed by a person other than the student under whose name the work is submitted or performed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"uwm-u-py-80\"><div class=\"uwm-l-container--base uwm-l-container--overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading heading-separator\" id=\"h-academic-misconduct-procedures\">Academic Misconduct Procedures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All cases of suspected academic misconduct follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/code\/admin_code\/uws\/14\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/code\/admin_code\/uws\/14\/\">Chapter UWS 14<\/a> process outlined in this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/academic-misconduct-procedures\/\" type=\"page\" id=\"1239\">flowchart<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the instructor suspects that the student has engaged in academic misconduct, they reach out to the appropriate&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/conduct\/academic-misconduct\/investigating-officers-for-academic-misconduct\/\">Investigating Officer(IO)<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:dos@uwm.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DOS<\/a>&nbsp;to discuss the case and learn if the student has any misconduct history&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The instructor offers the student a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/707\/2025\/05\/AM-Conference-Invite-Emai-Template.docx\">conference (DOCX)<\/a>&nbsp;to discuss the allegations\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students do not have to come to the conference, but must receive the offer<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the instructor still feels that the misconduct occurred, or if the student does not engage in the conference, they will then choose an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/academic-misconduct-procedures\/\" type=\"page\" id=\"1239\">appropriate sanction<\/a>&nbsp;(IOs and DOS office can support with sanction choice)&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When the instructor selects Group B sanctions, they will then need to notify the student of the violation by sending a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/707\/2025\/11\/Nov-Academic-Misconduct-Letter-Templat.docx\">letter<\/a>&nbsp;that includes the student\u2019s appeal rights\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>DOS Staff will proofread any letters before they are sent to students&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If group A is selected the student does not need to receive the letter, but the instructor should notify the DOS of the incident so it can be recorded&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once the letter is sent, the DOS staff will track the student appeal date and communicate with staff if a hearing is requested&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>An instructor who considers the misconduct to be serious enough to warrant probation, suspension or expulsion makes such a recommendation to the appropriate Investigating Officer (IO) who is an appointee of the dean in the student\u2019s school or college. If after discussions with the student the IO agrees with the instructor\u2019s recommendation, a hearing is scheduled before the academic misconduct hearing committee corresponding to the students status (undergraduate or graduate). Relative to such hearings students have a right to a written notice of the alleged offense and sanction sought, to question adverse witnesses, to be heard and present evidence, to be represented and obtain a record of the hearing at student expense and to a written decision and a copy of all applicable procedures. Students who are suspended or expelled by a hearing committee may appeal to the Chancellor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suspensions and expulsions bar enrollment at any campus in the UW System.
