Sustainable and Organic Agriculture: Opportunities for Technological Solutions

While sustainable and organic agriculture is often viewed as a return to traditional practices, in reality, these new management practices represent a positive progression in food production and land management. However, they also encompass and often require the application of heterogeneous materials or practices. Historically, this complexity limited the area across which these management types could be deployed; however, increasing demand for sustainably grown food is requiring larger land footprints for these practices. Technological tools and solutions are not only desired, but required, to enable production of healthy food with the least amount of chemicals and environmental impact possible, while maximizing rhw quality of food products and rural livelihoods. Nicole is an Agroecologist with the Michael Fields Agricultural Institute, which works to further regenrative and organic agriculture in the Upper Midwest and beyond. Nicole grew up in southern WI and consequently loves dairy cropping systems and forages. She double-majored in Agronomy and Spanish at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and completed her PhD in Crop Science at Washington State University, where she investigated agronomic and soil fertility management in dryland organic wheat-based systems. Nicole has conducted on-the-ground agricultural research in wheat, corn, beans, tomatoes, and forage and grazing systems, as well as working with Kernza, a new perennial grain crop.
