As you know, UWM has decided to shift to primarily online instruction after Thanksgiving break, in recognition of the spike in COVID-19 cases in the community and throughout the state. A limited amount of face-to-face instruction will occur after break, but not until the week of Dec. 7.
Students living in residence halls are welcome to stay on campus over break, and off-campus students are encouraged to avoid traveling home over break to limit the risk of spreading infection.
For all students, the following rules will be in place to manage post-Thanksgiving activities:
Students who live in residence halls
Students who live in residence halls are required to be tested:
- Once the week prior to leaving UWM for Thanksgiving break, and
- Two times the week after Thanksgiving break – once on either Monday, Nov. 30, or Tuesday, Dec. 1, and again on either Thursday, Dec. 3 or Friday, Dec. 4.
Residence hall students can move into their rooms while they wait for their tests but must limit movement within the residence halls and on campus and not gather on and off campus.Communal spaces in the residence halls will be closed until Saturday, Dec. 5.
Residence hall students who test positive will be placed into isolation and be provided an isolation space on campus.
Residence halls remain open and students’ University Housing contracts remain in place. Students should consult with University Housing if they have questions.
Students who attend face-to-face instructional activities
Students who attend face-to-face instructional activities are strongly encouraged to be tested prior to Thanksgiving break.
While most UWM classes and instructional activities will be entirely online after Thanksgiving break, there will be some limited exceptions in which face-to-face instruction will continue, starting on Dec. 7. Students will be contacted by instructors no later than Nov. 20 if any in-person instructional activities are to resume.
Any student who will attend face-to-face instructional activities on or after Dec. 7 must be tested two times the week after Thanksgiving break: once on either Monday, Nov. 30, or Tuesday, Dec. 1, and again on either Thursday, Dec. 3, or Friday, Dec. 4.
Students who test positive after Thanksgiving will not be allowed to attend face-to-face instructional activities until an isolation period is completed.
Students in internships and clinical placements
Students withinternships and clinical assignments at off-campus sites are expected to follow the testing protocols of the institution where they are assigned.
Student employees who work on campus
Student employees who work on campus must be tested two times the week after Thanksgiving break: once on either Monday, Nov. 30, or Tuesday, Dec. 1, and again on either Thursday, Dec. 3, or Friday, Dec. 4.
At a minimum, students must complete their first test no later than the end of their first working shift. If students have not completed at least one test prior to their first shift, supervisors should send students to complete a test during their shift.
Students employees who test positive must follow isolation protocol before resuming on-campus work.
Testing instructions for students
Students who live in the residence halls or will attend face-to-face class or work at the main UWM campus may be tested at either of the testing sites:
Students on the Waukesha or Washington County campuses may be tested at the main campus testing sites (above) or another site of their choosing.
Individuals who have had a positive PCR test within 90 days prior to Nov. 23 do not need to be tested.
All students who will need tests are encouraged to register for tests now for next week (the week of Nov. 23) and for two tests the week of Nov. 30.
