How will the music department figure out on-site safety for its students and faculty?

July 24, 2020

The Peck School of the Arts facilities area and Department of Music are committed to the safety and well-being of our student performers. We have been reviewing all available research relative to performance activities since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak. After considering research from a wide variety of resources, the school has decided to implement the following in our music curriculum:

  • Choral rehearsals will be conducted in a socially distanced manner in an outdoor courtyard. A specially designed “singers mask” will be provided for these rehearsals.
  • In the event of inclement weather where singing outside is not an option, the choirs will be broken up into smaller groups to allow for 10-foot social distancing in large open rooms. The “singers mask” will also be used for these rehearsals.
  • Conductors will be required to wear masks at all times.

Bands and Orchestras

  • Faculty are working to identify works that can be performed with smaller chamber ensembles to reduce the number of players in each rehearsal.
  • 6-foot social distancing rules will be observed at all times during rehearsals.
  • Performers whose instruments do not require the use of their mouth (strings, percussion) will be required to wear a mask at all times.
  • Performers whose instrument does require the use of their mouth (wind and brass) will be required to wear their mask until the moment they play their first note and will be required to put their mask back on the moment they play their last note. Additionally, the school is looking into mitigation strategies for wind and brass instruments including bell covers for brass and woodwind devices such as the clarinet bag.
  • Unnecessary talking will be discouraged in rehearsals.
  • Conductors will be required to wear masks at all times.

  • All teaching spaces will be fitted with barriers between students and instructors.
  • Voice lessons will be conducted solely online to reduce exposure for both students and faculty members.
  • All other lessons may be either online or face-to-face, depending on student and instructor preference.
  • Students and instructors will be masked and distant during face-to-face string and percussion lessons.
  • Woodwind and brass players will follow the protocols describe in the Bands and Orchestras section above.
