It offers learning and networking opportunities to promote strengths-based, trauma-sensitive peer services rooted in lived experience and peer values.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The peer professional workforce includes certified peer specialists (CPS), certified parent peer specialists (CPPS), and peer recovery coaches.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WiHPP is managed by UW-Milwaukee\u2019s Center for Innovative Transition, Education &amp; Employment, with oversight from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-commitment-to-peer-values\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Commitment to Peer Values<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WiHPP is committed to preserving the values and principles that make peer support unique while building the infrastructure needed for peer professionals to grow, lead, and succeed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WiHPP will partner with DHS and peer professionals to inform its programs and practices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-lived-experience-professional-excellence-and-stronger-communities\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lived Experience, Professional Excellence, and Stronger Communities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WiHPP recognizes lived experience as professional expertise and works to ensure peer professionals have access to high-quality training, continued professional development, and meaningful career pathways.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WiHPP opens October 1, 2026. It will support:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CPS and CPPS training and certification<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CEHs and professional development for all peer professionals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Workforce development for all peer professionals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This work builds upon the supports for the peer professional workforce created by the Wisconsin Peer Specialist Employment Initiative, which closes September 30, 2026.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The WiHPP team is working with existing CPS and CPPS trainers to provide the existing state-required training courses for people seeking to become a CPS or a CPPS. Over the next year, WiHPP is expected to move to a model where CPS and CPPS training courses can be offered by more organizations under the guidance of the WiHPP team. This includes bringing in more CPS and CPPS trainers through train-the-trainer sessions. Information on the train-the-trainer sessions will be shared here when it is available.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-cps-and-cpps-certification-information\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">CPS and CPPS Certification Information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two types of peer specialist certifications in Wisconsin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>certified peer specialist (CPS)<\/strong> is an individual with experience in the mental health and substance use services system trained to provide support to adults struggling to find a path to recovery. This certification has been available since 2010.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.wisconsin.gov\/library\/collection\/p-00972\">Certified Peer Specialist Scope of Practice<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.wisconsin.gov\/library\/collection\/p-00972a\">Certified Peer Specialist Code of Ethics<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.wisconsin.gov\/library\/collection\/p-00972b\">Certified Peer Specialist Core Competencies<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A<strong> certified parent peer specialist (CPPS)<\/strong> is<strong>\u202f<\/strong>an individual with experience raising a child with behavioral health challenges trained to use their experience navigating services in support of other parents. This certification has been available since 2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.wisconsin.gov\/publications\/p01081c.pdf\">Certified Parent Peer Specialist Scope of Practice<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.wisconsin.gov\/publications\/p01081.pdf\">Certified Parent Peer Specialist Code of Ethics<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.wisconsin.gov\/publications\/p01081a.pdf\">Certified Parent Peer Specialist Core Competencies<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certification is awarded after successful completion of a training course on the knowledge and skills necessary for effective peer support and passage of an exam.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The certification is valid for two years. Twenty hours of professional development must be completed during this time period to qualify for recertification.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Send questions regarding the core competencies, scope of practice, and code of ethics for certified peer specialists and certified parent peer specialists to the Wisconsin Department Health Services: <a href=\"mailto:DHSDCTSPeerSpecialists@dhs.wisconsin.gov\">DHSDCTSPeerSpecialists@dhs.wisconsin.gov<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-upcoming-cps-and-cpps-trainings\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Upcoming CPS and CPPS Trainings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Information on upcoming CPS and CPPS training courses and the application process for the trainings will be posted here when it is available.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-upcoming-cps-and-cpps-exams\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Upcoming CPS and CPPS Exams<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CPS &#8211; October 21, 2026:<\/strong> The exam will be proctored via Zoom between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. A sign-up for time slots will be distributed one week prior to the exam. <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/sce\/wisconsin-certified-peer-specialist-cps-certification-exam-application-instructions-2\/\">Applications<\/a> must be postmarked by September 23, 2026.
