The (RHC) is dedicated to serving Latine/a/o/x students at UWM and the Latine/a/o/x population of southeastern Wisconsin through a three-pronged mission: to provide academic services that promote Latine/a/o/x student success, to engage in outreach to the Latine/a/o/x community and beyond and to support applied research pertinent to Latine/a/os.
Latine is used when referring either to a group with multiple genders represented or to an individual who identifies as agender, gender nonconforming, or any other identity within the vast spectrum of gender and sexuality. Latine is the preferred term amongst Spanish speakers as it’s easier to pronounce than ‘Latinx’ and can be used in plural forms.
HOLA Archives Podcast Project
The HOLA Archives Podcast Project is a collaboration between the UWM Libraries and the UWM Roberto Hernandez Center and was made possible by a grant from the Wisconsin Humanities Council. The HOLA Archives take a deep dive into the stories of Milwaukee Latino/as who fought to make Milwaukee a more welcoming community. Drawing on oral history collections at the UWM Libraries and the Wisconsin Historical Society, this set of pilot episodes tells the story of the founding of the Spanish Speaking Outreach Institute – now the Roberto Hernandez Center; and the experience of Latina activists in Milwaukee in the late 1960s-early 1970s.
