Derrick Langston
- Success Coach, Black Student Cultural Center
Derrick Langston serves as a Success Coach in the Black Student Cultural Center (BSCC), where he has been a vital part of the team since May 2019. During his tenure, Derrick has played a key role in developing new programs and initiatives while enhancing existing BSCC offerings. Among his contributions, Derrick founded the “Brother to Brother” support group, spearheaded a peer mentoring program, and hosts the recurring “How to Get a 4.0” series, which equips students with actionable strategies for academic success. He also serves as the advisor for the Black Graduate Student Association, fostering community among Black graduate students, and acts as co-advisor for the Black Student Union and co-chair of the Youth Leadership Summit.
As a doctoral student in the Communication Department, Derrick brings six years of collegiate teaching experience to his role. He has taught Public Speaking and Interviewing at UWM, as well as at Southern Illinois University, where he earned two bachelor’s degrees and a master’s degree. Derrick’s expertise lies in academic skill-building, helping students with a wide range of topics, including homework, note-taking, studying, speech preparation, research paper writing, and presentation skills. He also provides guidance on managing speech and test anxiety, time and stress management, resume and cover letter writing, and applying for jobs and graduate programs.
Derrick places a strong emphasis on mentorship, offering a compassionate and supportive approach to addressing students’ concerns. Beyond his professional achievements, he is a devoted husband and father, committed to instilling the values of education and kindness in his daughter.
