Disney’s 2021 film\u00a0Encanto<\/i>\u00a0is having a huge cultural moment and its popularity can be a great way to introduce your students to the\u00a0magical realism genre that is deeply intertwined in this film<\/a>. This style is largely associated with Latin American writers such as Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez, Isabel Allende, and Jorge Luis Borges and mixes realistic fiction with “fantastic or mythical elements<\/a>.”\u00a0One of the most iconic books of the genre,\u00a0One Hundred Years of Solitude<\/i>, is “not an easy book to read, but it’s a deeply rewarding one” according to\u00a0TEDed’s short video<\/a>\u00a0explaining its importance in the literary cannon, which makes the point that magical realism is a tool used by Latin American writers to try to convey the complexity of living in a post-colonial era that continues to repeat its own mistakes.<\/div>\n

There are a large variety of approaches to introduce your students to this concept, including recommended reading lists (Latinx centered books\u00a0found here<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0picks from the Des Moines Public Library here<\/a>) exploring lesson plans (one\u00a0via EDSITEment here<\/a>\u00a0for grades 9-12 and\u00a0teaching Like Water for Chocolate for fiction writing<\/a>), and study guides for other films in the genre (Love in the Time of Cholera<\/a>).<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
