Four maps of Puerto Rico come together to highlight important historical moments in the island\u2019s colonial history. These primary sources\u2014paired with worksheet, timeline, and matching activities\u2014springboard a discussion regarding Puerto Rico\u2019s history of external control. Portrait of Tenochtitlan: Analyzing a Pre-Columbian City.<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Grade level:\u00a0<\/strong>6-8<br \/>\n<strong>Courses: <\/strong>Social Studies, Ancient Civilizations, Urban Studies, History of Mexico<br \/>\n<strong>Topics:\u00a0<\/strong>Pre-Colonial Mexico, City of Tenochtitlan, Mexico City, Comparison of Past vs. Present, Social Uses of Space, Urban Relationship to Natural Environment<\/p>\n<p>With this lesson, students analyze the past and present through Thomas Kole\u2019s \u201cA Portrait of Tenochtitlan\u201d\u2014a 3D recreation of the pre-Columbian Mesoamerican city formerly situated on Lake Texcoco. Las aves de Latinoam\u00e9rica.<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Level: <\/strong>Novice, intermediate, and advanced<strong><br \/>\nCourses: <\/strong>Spanish language, ecology, biology<strong><br \/>\nTopics: <\/strong>color vocabulary, Latin American birds \/ conservation, advocacy, discussion of art in social context \/ biology, ecology, habitat, environment<\/p>\n<p>This collection of Spanish language-learning lessons spans multiple skill levels while introducing students to Latin America\u2019s native bird species. Inspired by Robin Perkins\u2019 \u201cGuide to the Birdsong of\u201d music albums, students will practice color vocabulary with a \u201cGuess Who?\u201d activity, discuss advocacy and environmental conservation, and\/or employ their vocabulary skills when reading descriptions of Latin American birds! Amelio Robles \u00c1vila: Gender Identity during the Mexican Revolution<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Grade level:\u00a0<\/strong>9-12<br \/>\n<strong>Courses:\u00a0<\/strong>Social studies, English, World history<br \/>\n<strong>Topics:\u00a0<\/strong>Mexican Revolution, gender roles, gender transition<\/p>\n<p>In this lesson, students read selections from the chapter &#8220;Gender and Transgender in the Mexican Revolution: the Shifting Memory of Amelio Robles&#8221; (<em>Women Warriors and National Heroes: Global Histories<\/em>, Bloomsbury Academic, 2020). Students will learn about the life of Amelio Robles \u00c1vila, comparing his experience of the Mexican Revolution to that of the\u00a0<em>soldaderas<\/em> \u2013 women soldiers central to the military effort of the Mexican Revolution. Lenguas ind\u00edgenas de M\u00e9xico<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Grade level:\u00a0<\/strong>intermediate-to-advanced Spanish language learners<br \/>\n<strong>Courses:\u00a0<\/strong>Spanish language, social studies, geography<br \/>\n<strong>Topics:\u00a0<\/strong>Indigenous Languages, Prepositions, Geography of Mexico, Mexican States<\/p>\n<p>In this lesson, students will study <a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/c329eaa1f4ba4a2aaf598f66ec911fc6\">historical maps showing the distribution of Indigenous languages in Mexico<\/a> (housed at UWM&#8217;s own <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/libraries\/agsl\/\">American Geographical Society Library<\/a>) in order to describe the maps and begin to interpret them.
