Tropical Is Political: Caribbean Art Under the Visitor Economy Regime
The Americas Society is hosting an exhibition about the complexity of Caribbean economies being largely based on tourist dollars. While the exhibition is in-person, a pocket book available in Spanish and English can guide your students through some of the pieces that are included in the exhibition and a four-minute YouTube video guides you through the gallery. Artists include Allora & Calzadilla, Sofía Gallisá Muriente, Gwladys Gambie, Abigail Hadeed, nibia pastrana santiago, Oneika Russell, and more.
Other teaching resources relevant to this topic include “The Legacy of Colonialism in Caribbean Tourism“, “Tourism and the Environment in the Caribbean : An Economic Framework”, “Carnival in Antigua (Caribbean Sea): An Indigenous Festival in a Tourist Economy” and “Performance of tourism analysis: a Caribbean perspective.”
