{"id":8780,"date":"2026-03-05T10:52:55","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T16:52:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/cie\/study-abroad\/plan\/study-abroad-handbook\/academics\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T11:05:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T16:05:08","slug":"academics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/cie\/study-abroad\/students\/study-abroad-handbook\/academics\/","title":{"rendered":"Academics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"uwm-l-row\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-policies\">Policies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion\" data-accordion-prefix-classes=\"uwm\" data-accordion-cool-selectors=\"1\"><button class=\"uwm-p-accordion--toggle-button size-p-md\">Expand All<\/button>\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Academic Misconduct<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>All students on University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee programs must comply with all rules and regulations contained within the Student Regulations handbook issued by the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents and contained within the home campus student handbook.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UWM expects each student to be honest in academic performance. Failure to do so may result in discipline under rules published by the Board of Regents&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/code\/admin_code\/uws\/14.pdf\">(<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/code\/admin_code\/uws\/14.pdf\">C<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/code\/admin_code\/uws\/14.pdf\">hapter&nbsp;UWS 14<\/a>). The most common forms of academic dishonesty are cheating and plagiarism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The director of the UWM program has the right to suspend or expel a student on a program for violation of any academic or non-academic disciplinary policy pending the appropriate hearings upon return to UWM or home campus.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Non-Academic Misconduct<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Student non-academic disciplinary procedures can be found under&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/code\/admin_code\/uws\/17.pdf\">Chapter UWS 17<\/a>&nbsp;of University of Wisconsin System&nbsp;legislation.&nbsp;Examples of non-academic misconduct include, but are not restricted to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conduct which constitutes&nbsp;a serious danger&nbsp;to the personal safety of other members of the university community, including all study abroad programs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The sale or delivery of a controlled substance as defined by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/statutes\/statutes\/961\">Wisconsin Uniform Controlled Substance Act<\/a>&nbsp;(Ch.961, Stats.), or the possession of a controlled substance with the intent to sell or deliver<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conduct that seriously damages or destroys university property or attempts to do so<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stalking or harassment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conduct that obstructs or seriously impairs university-run or university-authorized activities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unauthorized possession of university property or property of another member of the university community<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knowingly making a false statement to any university employee or agent on a university related matter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NOTE: <\/strong>All participants on study abroad programs are subjected to local law and due process jurisprudence for violation <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Attendance<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Attendance is expected and is part of the academic portion of a student\u2019s program.&nbsp;It is especially critical for short-term programs. Failure to attend classes may result in the lowering of a grade; assigning failing grades for poor attendance; or in severe cases, a student being dropped from the class, thus not receiving credit for the course.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Absences<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Generally, for a planned absence, students should tell the instructor as soon as possible and&nbsp;make arrangements&nbsp;to take any scheduled quizzes, exams or labs in advance. Permission may not be guaranteed in all cases and should not be taken for granted. Personal travel will not be automatically accepted as an excused absence and should be pre-approved by the academic director.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-enrollment-amp-continuing-registration\">Enrollment &amp; Continuing Registration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Registration for the study abroad program is done by the Center for International Education (CIE)<\/strong><strong>.&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Registration cannot be&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>completed<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;and financial aid eligibility cannot be determined if there is a \u201chold\u201d on your records &#8211; this includes the Panther Enrollment Checklist requirement<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;and any Bursar\u2019s holds<\/strong><strong>.&nbsp;<\/strong>Please contact CIE&nbsp;if you have any questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CIE will enroll students into a study abroad placeholder that matches&nbsp;their study abroad program.&nbsp;The placeholder enrollment allows the student to maintain full-time status and receive financial aid to use towards their study abroad costs.&nbsp;Students will be enrolled in one or more of the following placeholders:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Non-Exchange: Global 297&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exchange:&nbsp;Exmural&nbsp;100;&nbsp;Exmural&nbsp;700&nbsp;(graduate)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-UWM:&nbsp;Exmural&nbsp;099;&nbsp;Exmural&nbsp;799&nbsp;(graduate)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Faculty-led:&nbsp;Students&nbsp;will be enrolled in actual courses based on the specific program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-continuing-registration\">Continuing Registration<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who are abroad and need to register for an upcoming semester back at UWM should use&nbsp;PAWS to do so&nbsp;just as they would at home. If you have trouble with registration, contact your academic advisor. Keep in mind that you can only use PAWS in English*&nbsp;and PAWS operates within the hours listed below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mon-Sat: 6:00 a.m.<\/strong><strong>&#8211;<\/strong><strong>12:00 a.m. (CDT), Sun:&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>12:00 p.m.<\/strong><strong>&#8211;<\/strong><strong>12:00 a.m. (CDT)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*PAWS will work only on computers that are in the English language, so you must set your computer to the English language to use PAWS. Alternatively, you can change the three-letter code in the URL for PAWS to \u201clang=ENG\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-grades-nbsp-credit-amp-nbsp-transcripts\">Grades,&nbsp;Credit &amp;&nbsp;Transcripts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Grades will be converted into U.S. letter grades; to get an idea of what the grading system is like your host country, please visit:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scholaro.com\/grade-conversion\/\">Foreign Credits Grade Conversion.<\/a> Grades can take up to 6-8 weeks to be processed; please be aware that all universities have different timelines for sending transcripts so this may slow the grade posting process.&nbsp;Students will not receive credit for sports and recreation courses taken abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion\" data-accordion-prefix-classes=\"uwm\" data-accordion-cool-selectors=\"1\"><button class=\"uwm-p-accordion--toggle-button size-p-md\">Expand All<\/button>\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Credit for UWM-Sponsored Exchange and Non-Exchange Programs<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Students who participate in UWM-sponsored exchange and non-exchange programs earn&nbsp;<strong>UWM credit&nbsp;<\/strong>and the grades they receive abroad are factored into their GPA.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Credit for Non-UWM Programs<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Students receive&nbsp;<strong>transfer credit<\/strong>&nbsp;for participation in non-UWM-sponsored study abroad programs and must register through CIE. Transfer credit does not count toward students&#8217; GPAs.&nbsp;Credit for non-UWM programs will transfer&nbsp;as long as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The program is sponsored by an accredited institution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Passing grades are earned in courses taken abroad.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grades are verified by an official transcript from the host university.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work done abroad does not duplicate previous work.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Transcripts<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>There are some cases where students will have to request their transcripts to be sent to their home university. For most CIE affiliated programs, this process has already been arranged. If your program requests that you fill out a form, or is unsure of where to send the transcript upon completion of your program, the address is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UWM CIE Study Abroad&nbsp;<br>P.O. Box 413&nbsp;<br>Garland Hall 138&nbsp;<br>Milwaukee, WI 53201-0413&nbsp;<br>USA<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It is the students\u2019 responsibility to have the official transcripts come to CIE first and&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>not<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;sent to Enrollment Services.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Non-UWM students participating on UWM study abroad programs may request an official transcript upon completion of the program and payment of all program fees. There is a nominal fee associated with this request. Please see the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/onestop\/your-student-record\/transcripts-verifications\/\">UWM Registrar Office\u2019s website<\/a>&nbsp;for current prices.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-course-equivalency\">Course Equivalency<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All courses taken abroad will come back as electives.&nbsp;If a student needs a course taken abroad to count as a specific UWM course, they must complete the&nbsp;Course Equivalency Approval Form (CEAF) process.
