We extend opportunities to students living outside the Milwaukee area through our online courses, reaching a wide variety of students with various subjects and academic backgrounds. We have also forged a number of links with associations and institutions worldwide. We invite you to join the growing family of SOIS students, graduates, and supporters from all over the world! – School of Information Studies
Why SOIS students should study abroad:
Cultural Development – Studying abroad gives students the opportunity to work with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures. Studying abroad presents the perfect chance to appreciate diversity first hand, helps students recognize and dismiss stereotypes they may unintentionally have and it gives students the opportunity to understand their own culture while appreciating other cultures.
Foreign Language Skills – Maintaining a proficient level of vocabulary and conversational skills in a foreign language requires one to be constantly exposed to it. If knowing a foreign language is an important part of a student’s education major or just a desire to learn a foreign language, studying abroad is a great way to learn, practice, and expand on your language skills.
Personal Development – Being able to determine your strengths and weaknesses are important from a career standpoint but also from a personal development standpoint, Studying abroad can bring out the independent side of a student to help them function and live in a different country. Studying abroad can help students develop the ability to be adaptable and critical thinking skills. Being abroad can present new and various situations that students have never encountered before and forcing them to step out of their comfort zone.
Scholarships – Scholarships are available to help finance your study abroad experience. Doing extra research can wield financial benefits and unique scholarship opportunities.
New Perspectives/Broaden views of the world – Cultural and diversity is nothing new to UWM students, studying abroad will give students first-hand experience. By going to the country of choice students have the chance to interact with natives and learn about their way of life, broadening their view on the world.
Considerations While Abroad
If you choose a Non-UWM program, you are responsible for making sure your official transcript is sent to the Study Abroad Office. All students are responsible for making sure their grades are transferred to the Study Abroad Office from their respective university.
Electives can be easily completed while abroad, another option for students is to have some of the courses taken abroad be counted towards their degree or certificate. Check out the Course Equivalency Page.
There are some courses within each major that need to be completed on UWM campus. It is recommended to meet with an academic advisor to determine the courses that need to be completed before deciding to study abroad.
Asking the right questions are very important when deciding what program works best for your major, minor and or certificate. The Study Abroad office recommends talking to your Academic Advisor, your Study Abroad Coordinator and a Financial Aid Specialist. Below are questions the Study Abroad Office recommends asking your Academic Advisor, a Study Abroad Coordinator, and a Financial Aid Specialist.
