Test Scores for Undergraduate English Language Proficiency Requirement

At the undergraduate studies level, there are two levels of English proficiency: Full Admission and Conditional Admission.  Once you are admitted, you must take a placement test to determine whether or not you have English coursework to complete.  Please select below for more information.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, testing centers are closed around the world. In light of this, UWM is currently accepting Duolingo, an exam that can be taken from home. Please review the table to see the appropriate scores for admission.

UWM is now accepting the online IELTS Indicator Exam. The scores are the same as the traditional IELTS and can be reviewed below.

For applicants from China, we are now accepting the online TOEFL ITP exam. The scoring is the same as our other TOEFL exams and can be reviewed below.

Full

Regular admission: Students admitted in this category are eligible to enroll in full-time academic coursework.  Students are also eligible to enroll in EAP program courses. Depending on subsequent on-site placement testing, students MAY be required to complete specific credit-bearing EAP coursework in their first one to three semesters of enrollment.

Conditional

Conditional admission: Students admitted in this category are required to enroll in UWM’s ELA “IEP” program and and are not eligible to register for academic courses until a higher level of English proficiency is achieved. Note-UWM-Waukesha or UWM-Washington County applicants are not eligible for admission with Conditional admission.
