Test Scores for Undergraduate English Language Proficiency Requirement

At the undergraduate studies level, there are two levels of English proficiency: Full Admission and Conditional Admission.  Once you are admitted, you must take a placement test to determine whether or not you have English coursework to complete.  Please select below for more information.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, testing centers are closed around the world. In light of this, UWM is currently accepting Duolingo, an exam that can be taken from home. Please review the table to see the appropriate scores for admission. 

UWM is now accepting the online IELTS Indicator Exam. The scores are the same as the traditional IELTS and can be reviewed below.

For applicants from China, we are now accepting the online TOEFL ITP exam. The scoring is the same as our other TOEFL exams and can be reviewed below.

All New students are required to be placed into the appropriate English course upon arrival to UWM. Based on your scores used for admission, you can expect the following. Placement may adjust your path to graduation.

Full Admission –

Students who have full admission will need to take a placement test in English. All students are required to successfully complete English 102 to graduate from UW-Milwaukee.

Full Admission Foundation 1 –

Students placing into this category will require successful completion of 3 credits/1 semester of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) coursework before taking English 102, the university’s requirement to graduate from UW-Milwaukee.

Full Admission Foundation 2 – up to 2 semesters

Students placing into this category will require successful completion of up to 10-credits/2 semesters of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) coursework before taking English 102, the university’s requirement to graduate from UW-Milwaukee.

Full Admission Foundation 3 – up to 3 semesters

Students placing into this category will require successful completion of up to 17-credits/3 semesters of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) coursework before taking English 102, the university’s requirement to graduate from UW-Milwaukee.

Conditional Admission –

Students placing into this category will take a minimum of one semester (sixteen weeks) in UWM’s Intensive English Program (IEP).  To receive full admission or full foundation admission, students must pass CEFR B1 Student Learning Outcomes in all three core classes (Reading, Listening & Speaking, and writing) or submit a minimum IELTS score of 5.0, TOEFL score of 65 or Duolingo score of 85.

  • Applicants must send TOEFL scores from ETS electronically
    • UWM’s school code for TOEFL is 1473
    • TOEFL scores cannot be more than 2 years old
  • Applicants must mail or send an electronic copy of an official IELTS score report to the International Admissions Office
    • IELTS (ACADEMIC ONLY) scores cannot be more than 2 years old
