FLAS Undergraduates Fellowships

UWM’s Center for International Education has been awarded prestigious Title VI National Resource Center (NRC) and Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship grants by the US Department of Education. The grants will support a series of interconnected initiatives to strengthen UWM and Wisconsin K-16 students’ participation in meaningful study of languages and global issues.

FLAS Fellowships will support undergraduates’ intermediate or advanced level (200-level or higher) studies of Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, or Russian.

Academic year fellows receive up to $15,000 for full-time undergraduates enrolled in language and internationally-focused studies.  Summer fellows receive up to $7,500 for intensive summer study of a language, at an approved US or overseas language program

FLAS Graduate Fellowships

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), through funding made possible by the U.S. Department of Education and the Office of International and Foreign Language Education have a limited number of Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships to distribute for Summer 2019 for graduate students. These fellowships are awarded to promote training in less commonly taught languages of the region for students pursuing a Latin American/Caribbean area studies specialization in their graduate program. The primary language for the award is Brazilian Portuguese, but other less commonly taught languages of the region (Haitian Creole, Quechua, Aymara, Mixtec, Yucatec Maya, Kaqchikel Maya, etc.) are eligible for approval.”
