Support for Student Employees

Dear Student Employees,

I realize this is a stressful time due to frequent changes and uncertainty, and it is not what any of us were expecting this semester. Please know that we are working hard to resolve issues that are causing hardship for our student employees as a result of the state-mandated COVID-19 orders to limit personal contact and the subsequent impact on employment.

We know that many student employees are unable to perform their duties remotely. We are working to identify alternative student hourly employment assignments and tasks and will share more information as this develops over the next few days. Our student employees are a valuable part of our workforce, and as operational planning is solidified, supervisors will be in contact with you about your status.

We discussed with UW System whether it would be possible to pay student hourly employees per their normal schedules even if they cannot work remotely. Unfortunately, given state rules and the financial demands created by this situation, we do not have a mechanism to pay student hourly employees who are not working or to provide COVID-19 leave to student employees under the UW System policy.

Please know that we have advocated on your behalf. Our goal at this time is to keep as many of our student employees working as possible and to provide alternative UWM employment opportunities or identify alternatives in the community.

These are unprecedented times, and I am truly sorry for the ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting you. Please take good care of yourself and follow CDC guidelines to protect yourself, family members and loved ones.

Best regards,

Mark A. Mone
