Dear Colleagues,

The nation and this campus mourn the horrific deaths of 49 individuals in an Orlando, Florida nightclub over the weekend. As authorities continue their investigation, we learn more about the lives lost and the individual who was responsible for their untimely deaths. We extend our heartfelt thoughts and condolences to all who are impacted by this senseless tragedy.

UWM is a diverse campus and is proud to be among the nation’s top campuses for LGBT+ students. We are committed to creating a safe and welcoming campus for LGBT+ students and their allies.

Terrible events such as we witnessed in Orlando bring all of us together and remind us of the importance to be steadfast in our mission of inclusivity, acceptance, care and support for our entire campus community. This mission impacts every individual.

Together, we grieve as we hear the personal details of the Orlando victims and learn more about the scope of this devastating tragedy.

Our campus has a number of resources for students, faculty and staff in need of help. Counseling services for students are available through our Norris Health Center. Faculty and staff in need of assistance may contact our Employee Assistance Program online or by calling (800) 634-6433. There also are a number of mental health resources available to all members of the campus community.

I am deeply concerned about the well-being of our students, faculty, staff and visitors. Standing together against hatred and providing a safe environment are top priorities. UWM is a campus that cares for and embraces all in our community.

Best regards,
