Chancellor’s Update: Ongoing Campus Shooting Investigation

new chancellor header

Dear UWM Faculty, Staff and Students,

As you likely know, a shooting incident occurred last week in our Peck School of the Arts Fine Arts Complex. Two UWM Police Department officers responded to a report of a man sleeping in the complex while it was closed to the public. The man was discovered to be in possession of a loaded firearm and was shot during an altercation. The firearm was recovered from the scene.

Today, the Milwaukee County District Attorney charged the man in a separate bail-jumping case. The district attorney also told the media that his office is reviewing both the use of force by the officers involved as well as additional charges for the suspect. Further action by the district attorney’s office will not take place until late next week at the earliest. Meanwhile, the court issued a no-contact order for the suspect, barring him from our campus and residence halls if he is released from jail.

While we are committed to transparency, we are limited in commenting about these investigations while they are ongoing and do not control their timing. We will share as much information as we are able as it becomes available.

Counseling services and information about campus safety alerts are available to all faculty, staff and students and we encourage anyone to take advantage of these resources.

Safety Alerts

UWM’s Safety Awareness for Everyone (S.A.F.E.) Alert system allows students, faculty and staff to receive notifications via email and/or text message in the event of campus emergencies – https://uwm.edu/police/services/safety-alerts/

Students, faculty and staff are automatically signed up for e-mails from SAFE Alert by having a UWM email. Students are automatically enrolled in text alerts with a cell phone number as listed in the cell phone section of their PAWS account. However, faculty and staff need to sign up for text alerts – https://uwm.edu/police/wp-content/uploads/sites/58/2019/03/How_to_Get_UWM_Rave_Alerts.pdf

The UWM Mobile App contains safety information.

The well-being and safety of our students, faculty and staff are of top concern and remain a critical priority.
