{"id":2453,"date":"2024-10-16T10:44:46","date_gmt":"2024-10-16T15:44:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/centerforwaterpolicy\/?p=2453"},"modified":"2024-10-16T10:44:47","modified_gmt":"2024-10-16T15:44:47","slug":"center-for-water-policy-seeks-water-policy-and-science-communications-graduate-fellow-25-27","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/centerforwaterpolicy\/center-for-water-policy-seeks-water-policy-and-science-communications-graduate-fellow-25-27\/","title":{"rendered":"Center for Water Policy Seeks Water Policy and Science Communications Graduate Fellow"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Center for\u202fWater\u202fPolicy\u202fis seeking candidates for a two-year funded Water\u202fPolicy\u202fand Science Communications\u202fGraduate Student Research Fellowship, while earning a master\u2019s degree from the School of Freshwater\u202fSciences at the University of Wisconsin\u2013Milwaukee. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be considered for the Fellowship, the student must be admitted to the School\u2019s water policy thesis track in our master\u2019s degree program.\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/academics\/ms-freshwater-sciences-technology-thesis-water-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Click here for information on how to apply for the master\u2019s degree program.<\/a>\u202fApplicants should indicate interest in the \u201cWater Policy and Science Communications Fellowship\u201d on their personal statement when applying to the graduate program.\u202f<strong>The fall semester 2025 admission deadline is January 31, 2025.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Fellowship will begin in Fall 2025\u202fand\u202frun through Spring 2027. The successful candidate will have a bachelor\u2019s degree in journalism, communications, political science, public policy, economics, environmental science, engineering, or a related field.\u202fCandidates should be interested in conducting graduate research toward a thesis focused on water policy and science communications as well as publishing papers in scientific journals, writing policy briefs, and communicating research results to broader audiences. The Fellowship represents a unique opportunity for a student who wants to explore the intersection between\u202fwater\u202fpolicy,\u202fscience,\u202fand\u202fcommunications.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>The Fellow will be enrolled in the water policy thesis track master\u2019s degree at UWM\u2019s School of Freshwater\u202fSciences to conduct original thesis research around the topics of water policy, science, and communication. The specific topic of the student\u2019s work will be determined by the student, in consultation with Center for\u202fWater\u202fPolicy\u202fDirector,\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/0ukale\/ss99ods\/c0cx9j\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Melissa Scanlan<\/a>. Professor Scanlan will supervise the student work\u202fand\u202fserve as the student\u2019s advisor. The work performed by the student will culminate in a thesis that will be defended before graduation. The student may have an opportunity to work with <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/people\/egan-daniel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dan Egan<\/a>, Journalist in Residence\u202fand\u202fauthor of\u202f<em>Death\u202fand\u202fLife of the Great Lakes<\/em>\u202fand\u202f<em>The Devil&#8217;s Element: Phosphorus and a World Out of Balance<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Fellow\u202fwill also be employed 50% time in the Center for\u202fWater\u202fPolicy. The Fellow will join a thriving interdisciplinary team focused on applying academic research to conserve, restore, and protect freshwater. The Fellow will develop multimedia communications, outreach materials, and strategies for Center publications, media, and events.\u202fThese responsibilities involve stakeholder engagement and social media savvy.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>The Center for\u202fWater\u202fPolicy\u202fis interested in candidates who will contribute to diversity\u202fand\u202fequal opportunity in higher education through their research.
