Pritchard<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/c21\/slow-action-recommended-reading\/\">Our last <em>Slow Digest<\/em> post<\/a> featured a list of recommendations for further reading on C21\u2019s current research theme, <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/c21\/events\/current-programs\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/c21\/events\/current-programs\/\">Slow\u00a0Action<\/a>.\u00a0This week,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0sharing\u00a0a\u00a0selection\u00a0of media\u00a0pertinent to our\u00a0exploration of\u00a0collective organizing across communities and institutions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To recap, this year, C21 will explore the practices, methodologies, histories, and theories of collective organizing across communities and institutions within the theme of Slow Action. Slow Action asks the following questions:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How do attention and pace shape what is possible \u2013 inside and outside the university \u2013 as we face the most pressing challenges of our time?\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How might\u00a0the humanities\u00a0help us understand and enact organizing as a form of care?\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What does it look like to build actionable pathways that are both purposeful and adaptable, rooted in values yet open to change?\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The list of recommendations below is organized by\u00a0media\u00a0type:\u00a0archives, film, and storytelling.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"has-alpha-channel-opacity uwm-c-hr--center-short\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-slow-action-in-the-archive-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Slow Action in the Archive<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Neal, L. (1968). &#8220;The Black Arts Movement.&#8221;\u00a0<em>The Drama\u00a0Review<\/em>,\u00a0<em>12<\/em>(4), 29\u201339.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Writing at the height of the Black Arts Movement (1965-75), Neal argues for Black cultural practice rooted in community, self-determination, and the needs and aspirations of Black people. He rejects the separation of the artist from their community, positioning cultural production as part of the broader work of social and political transformation. This essay asks its readers to consider how art, cultural institutions, and collective creative practices can build the foundation for change that extends beyond a single protest or political moment.\u00a0See also Langston Hughes\u2019 essay, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/loseyourmother.voices.wooster.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/132\/2018\/02\/Langston-Hughes-22The_Negro-Artist-and-the-Racial-Mountain22.pdf\">The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain<\/a>\u201d (1926).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Milwaukee Public Library\u2019s Black Arts Movement Digital Collection\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MPL\u2019s digital collection documents the artists, organizations, exhibitions, and cultural spaces that shaped Milwaukee\u2019s Black Arts Movement from the 1960s into the early 2000s. The collection\u00a0demonstrates\u00a0how archives can preserve the cumulative work of community memory and cultural production, allowing movements to remain accessible to communities long after their original moment. It also asks us to consider archiving itself as Slow Action \u2013 the ongoing work of collecting, preserving, describing, and making memory available across generations.\u00a0See also UWM Archives March on Milwaukee Digital Archive Collection. N. (2020). &#8220;A Living Archive of Desire: Teresita la Campesina and the Embodiment of Queer Latino Community Histories.&#8221; In A. Burton (Ed.),\u00a0<em>Archive Stories<\/em>\u00a0(pp. 111\u2013135). Duke University Press.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the life and testimony of Teresita la Campesina, a transgender Latina performer and activist in San Francisco\u2019s Mission District, Roque Ram\u00edrez considers how histories marginalized by traditional archives can survive through bodies, memories, performance, and storytelling. Testimonio becomes an archival practice through which individual memory carries a larger collective and community history. This \u201cliving archive\u201d expands our understanding of what an archive can be: a person, a song, a performance, a memory, or an encounter through which history is transmitted. Ahmir \u201cQuestlove\u201d Thompson\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This film documents the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, a series of free concerts that brought together thousands of people in Harlem for performances by artists such as Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Mahalia Jackson, Gladys Knight &amp; the Pips, and Sly and the Family Stone. Although the festival was filmed, much of the footage remained&nbsp;largely unseen.&nbsp;<em>Summer of Soul<\/em>&nbsp;connects music, gathering, and cultural expression to Black political consciousness and community formation during a period of social change. It also invites us to think about slow action through collective joy, cultural gathering, and the recovery of overlooked histories as forms of sustained political and archival work. You can see the trailer in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=slFiJpAxZyQ\">link<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution<\/em>\u00a0(2020), dirs. Nicole Newnham and Jim\u00a0LeBrecht\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This film traces the relationships that developed at Camp&nbsp;Jened, a summer camp for young people with disabilities. It follows several former campers as they became involved in the disability rights movement of the 1970s. The documentary shows political changes&nbsp;emerging&nbsp;through years of friendship, community-building, organizing, protest, and sustained advocacy that eventually contributed to major changes in disability rights and public policy. Through the lens of Slow Action, the film&nbsp;demonstrates&nbsp;how movements grow through sustained relationships, collective care, and the long-term work of transforming both institutions and public understandings of disability.&nbsp;Watch the film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OFS8SpwioZ4\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"has-alpha-channel-opacity uwm-c-hr--center-short\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-slow-action-through-storytelling-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Slow Action through Storytelling<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"6\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u00a0<em>By Every Measure<\/em>\u00a0by Radio Milwaukee\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By Every Measure<\/em>&nbsp;examines systemic racism in Milwaukee and the historical processes that produced contemporary racial disparities. Episodes pair discussions of structural inequality with people and organizations working toward change. Listen to the episodes <a href=\"https:\/\/radiomilwaukee.org\/podcast\/by-every-measure\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"7\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Audio Interference\u00a0<\/em>by Interference Archive\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This podcast works together with Interference Archive, based in Brooklyn, NY\u2013 a social space, exhibition venue, and open stacks archive of movement culture. Its mission is to explore the relationship between cultural production and social movements. The podcast documents the activists, artists, and organizers whose histories make up the archive. Find the podcast in this <a href=\"https:\/\/interferencearchive.org\/what-we-do\/audio-interference\/\">link<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"8\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Stories for Power<\/em>\u00a0by The Storytelling &amp; Organizing Project\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Storytelling &amp; Organizing Project\u2019s <em>Stories for Power<\/em> is an oral history podcast documenting\u00a0roughly 25\u00a0years of community accountability, transformative justice, and abolitionist feminist organizing.
