SUMMARY:Scholars to Storytellers
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 6\, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM\n\n\n\n118 Curtain Hall\, 3243 N. Downer Ave.\n\n\n\nPrior registration required.\n\n\n\n\nScholars are frequently called upon to share their expertise with a diverse range of publics outside the confines of academia—from policymakers to civic organizations to the media. A critical part of this public engagement—and the place where it often begins—is the publication of a book with a “trade press” (i.e.\, a commercial\, non-university/academic publisher\, with a powerful marketing and publicity apparatus). Not all academics have a desire to do this kind of work. However\, for those who do want to engage with the “public sphere”\, there is often confusion about where to begin\, and a lack of resources to help with the process. Worse\, there are sometimes institutional disincentives\, in the form of tenure clocks\, skepticism from colleagues\, or the pressure to produce “real scholarship” that advances the field. \n\n\n\nThis “Scholars to Storytellers” workshop with John Ghazvinian is designed for scholars interested in better understanding the process of finding new opportunities\, writing in a more accessible register\, and other skills related to making the transition into writing for the general public. \n\n\n\nLearn more about Scholars to Storytellers. \n\n\n\n\nAbout John Ghazvinian\nJohn Ghazvinian is an author\, historian and former journalist\, specializing in the history of US-Iran relations. His latest book\, America and Iran: A History\, 1720 to the Present (Knopf\, 2021)\, is a comprehensive survey of the bilateral relationship\, based on years of archival research in both Iran and the United States. He is also author of Untapped: The Scramble for Africa’s Oil (Harcourt\, 2007)\, as well as coeditor of American and Muslim Worlds before 1900 (Bloomsbury\, 2020). He has written for such publications as Newsweek\, the New York Times\, The Nation\, the Washington Post\, the Sunday Times and the Huffington Post\, and has taught modern Middle East history at a number of colleges and universities in the Philadelphia area. He earned his doctorate in history at Oxford University\, and was the recipient of a “Public Scholar” fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 2016-2017\, as well as a fellowship from the Carnegie Corporation’s special initiative on Islam in 2009-2010. \n\n\n\nGhazvinian previously taught at the University of Pennsylvania\, where he served as Associate Director (2018-2020) and Executive Director (2020-2025) of the Middle East Center. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to UWM faculty\, staff\, and graduate students. Space is limited. Prior registration is required.  \n\n\n\nThis event is supported by the College of Letters & Science\, Office of the Dean.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n Register for Scholars to Storytellers\n Space is limited; prior registration is required. \n \n \n Step 1 of 2\n \n \n 50%\n \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n Enter Email\n \n \n \n Confirm Email\n \n \n \n Zip Code(Required)\n \n \n Next \n \n \n \n \n How did you hear about this event?(Required)Check all that apply.\n \n Direct outreach / word of mouth\n \n \n Marketing email from C21\n \n \n UWM campus news / newsletter\n \n \n UWM campus flyer / digital ad\n \n \n Social media\n \n \n Google / internet search / AI\n \n \n Other\n If you answered "other\," please explain.\n Previous Submit
