C21 offers several project-oriented Summer Fellow positions (with modest stipends) that provide career experience opportunities for students in the humanities, arts, social sciences, and library and information sciences. The Summer 2023 cohort will work on their individual projects and come together once a week as a team for information sharing and troubleshooting. All fellows will be compensated with hourly pay (20 hours/week for 8 weeks). Learn more below.

Summer Fellow: Nourishing Trust (2)

Accompanying our 2023 symposium, Nourishing Trust, C21 seeks up to two graduate students (Master’s or Doctoral level) to help facilitate stories across Milwaukee that document food journeys: how do people get to where they can gather, prepare and consume their food, and what are their experiences along the way? This eight-week intensive position runs from the week of June 5th  to August 1st with a May orientation period.

Nourishing Trust Fellows will visit farmer’s markets, food pantries, libraries, and other partner locations and events to facilitate stories through voice recording, paper surveys, maps, and on-site art projects. The ideal candidate would have some experience facilitating storying (via oral history, improv, or education). A candidate with research interests in interdisciplinary methods, fieldwork, and/or food and land justice would benefit greatly from this project.

Fellows are expected to travel to two sites per week with a partner, gather data, and organize it for storage and later interpretation, analysis, and sharing. A driver’s license and the ability to drive a UWM vehicle are a plus.

Summer Fellow: Digital Humanities (1)

The Digital Humanities Fellow will oversee one major project related to Center’s website archive and provide insight into archiving and design needs for the Nourishing Trust and Gallery Map projects. The ideal candidate would be a Master’s or Doctoral student and know how to navigate WordPress and related platforms, have familiarity with HTML, as well as be able to navigate design platforms like Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.

Summer Fellow: Mural (1)*

The Mural Fellow will design and execute a wall mural to be located in the Library of the Center (9th Floor, Curtin Hall). Ideally, the Mural Fellow will have experience designing and/or painting large-scale art projects, with some familiarity in how to plan and budget for a large-scale wall painting. It is possible that the Mural Fellow project could be a team project with two compensated students.

*If you are interested in this position, please include examples of artwork with your CV.

Summer Fellow: Gallery (1)

The Gallery Fellow will work on two major projects: 1) completing a Map of UWM Gallery spaces and 2) the plan and first steps toward the installation of the new C21 exhibition. The ideal candidate would be a student in one of UWM’s graduate fine arts or museum studies programs with some familiarity of Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop for creating exhibition information cards and related exhibition needs.
