her stories

Join us for a discussion with English professor Elana Levine about her new book Her Stories: Daytime Soap Opera and US Television History (Duke, 2020).

In this talk, Levine draws on archival research and her experience as a longtime soap fan to build a history of daytime television soap opera as a uniquely gendered cultural form and a central force in the rise and fall of network television. Maureen Ryan, Deputy Director of C21 and co-editor of the book Emergent Feminisms: Complicating a Postfeminist Media Culture (Routledge, 2018), will talk to Levine about studying women’s popular culture, the work of historiographic research, and how to research and theorize the lived experiences of women.

Elana Levine is Professor of Media, Cinema and Digital Studies in the Department of English at UWM.
