{"id":16568,"date":"2025-02-20T12:11:09","date_gmt":"2025-02-20T18:11:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/business\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;p=16568"},"modified":"2025-03-26T08:29:45","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T13:29:45","slug":"bradley-lecture-series","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/business\/event\/bradley-lecture-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Bradley Lecture Series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-16565 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/554\/2025\/02\/James-Poterba-0624.jpg02-25-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><strong>Debt, Deficits, and Sustainability: The US Fiscal Challenge<br \/>\n<\/strong><em><strong>James Poterba, Mitsui Professor of Economics at MIT and President of the National Bureau of Economic Research<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Federal debt as a share of GDP has increased from about 35% to 95% in\u00a0the last two decades, with the largest increases occurring during the\u00a0Global Financial Crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0 The federal budget\u00a0deficit was 6.4% of GDP in 2024, and it is projected to grow as the US\u00a0population ages and a larger share of the population draws Social\u00a0Security benefits and qualifies for Medicare and Medicaid.\u00a0\u00a0What are the\u00a0economic effects of high and rising deficits, and the debt they create?\u00a0What are the implications of extending all or most of the Tax Cuts and\u00a0Jobs Act on the debt trajectory?\u00a0 Is current fiscal policy on a\u00a0sustainable path, and if it isn\u2019t, what sort of policy actions,\u00a0including entitlement program reforms and revenue raisers including\u00a0tariffs and tax changes, could get it there?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">About the Speaker<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>James Poterba is the Mitsui Professor of Economics at MIT and the President of the National Bureau of Economic Research, a non-profit research organization with nearly 1,600 affiliated economists. Dr. Poterba is a trustee of the College Retirement Equity Fund (CREF), the TIAA-CREF mutual funds, and of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Dr. Poterba served as a member of the President\u2019s Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Poterba holds an undergraduate degree from Harvard College and a D. Phil. in Economics from Oxford University, where he was a Marshall Scholar. He has been an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellow, a Batterymarch Fellow, a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences, and a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. In 2014 he received the Daniel M. Holland Medal from the National Tax Association for the study and practice of public finance.<\/p>\n<p>Registration is now closed.
