{"id":17368,"date":"2025-06-19T15:44:56","date_gmt":"2025-06-19T20:44:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/business\/?p=17368"},"modified":"2026-02-16T10:49:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T16:49:13","slug":"student-research-how-housing-prices-could-be-reshaping-wisconsins-classrooms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/business\/student-research-how-housing-prices-could-be-reshaping-wisconsins-classrooms\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Research: How Housing Prices Could Be Reshaping Wisconsin\u2019s Classrooms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When <strong>Joseph Ogunlade<\/strong> began digging into the connection between housing prices and college enrollment in Wisconsin, he was chasing more than data\u2014he was chasing a deeper understanding of the American dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEducation and homeownership have long symbolized upward mobility,\u201d says Joseph, an MBA student in the College. \u201cBut what we\u2019re seeing now is that rising housing costs may actually be discouraging people from pursuing postsecondary education. That\u2019s a major shift.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With mentorship from <strong>Assistant Professor of Marketing Pallav Routh<\/strong> and support from the <strong>Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute<\/strong> (NMDSI), Joseph set out to explore how housing affordability is impacting college enrollment trends across Wisconsin counties. His findings are eye-opening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHigh school graduation rates are improving, but enrollment in universities and technical colleges is declining, especially in smaller cities,\u201d Joseph says. \u201cOur data also show that male students are more affected by rising housing costs than female students, and unemployment plays a role in compounding the effect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Routh emphasizes the importance of this work. \u201cAt first glance, housing prices and education might seem unrelated,\u201d he says. \u201cBut data science helps us connect the dots. These insights can point to real challenges for policymakers and communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funded by NMDSI\u2019s Student Research Scholars Program, the project gave Joseph the time and resources to run complex models, clean data from multiple sources and explore nuanced relationships within the data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithout that funding and support, I wouldn\u2019t have been able to dive so deeply,\u201d Joseph notes. \u201cThis experience made me more inquisitive and passionate about housing affordability and its broader economic impacts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Routh agrees. \u201cThe NMDSI doesn\u2019t just support research\u2014it values the effort and curiosity behind it,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd that\u2019s what leads to impactful, student-driven discoveries like Joseph\u2019s that have tremendous potential.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joseph hopes his research will inspire policies that better support families balancing housing and education costs. \u201cI want this to help schools, nonprofits, and local leaders support students who are quietly struggling,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the project continues to grow, both Joseph and Dr. Routh see opportunities to expand the research through interdisciplinary collaboration and larger data sets. \u201cThis isn\u2019t just about numbers,\u201d Joseph says. \u201cIt\u2019s about real people, real families and the systems that either support or limit their futures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Joseph Ogunlade began digging into the connection between housing prices and college enrollment in Wisconsin, he was chasing more than data\u2014he was chasing a deeper understanding of the American dream. \u201cEducation and homeownership have long symbolized upward mobility,\u201d says &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3012,"featured_media":17369,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","uwm_wg_additional_authors":[]},"categories":[97,39],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-17368","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-culture","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.3 (Yoast SEO v27.3) -
