You\u2019ve not only got a business idea, but you\u2019ve developed a solid business plan to back it up and are ready to launch. The Scheinfeld Awards encourage student entrepreneurship, helping launch new Wisconsin ventures and take new ideas to market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the James D. Scheinfeld Entrepreneurial Awards Competition, you have the opportunity to convince a panel of venture capitalists, business executives, and educators that your business plan is not only viable, but worth funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each spring semester, multiple awards are given to promising ventures. The 2026 final competition is scheduled for Wednesday, June 16th and will be held in-person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-tabs\" data-tabs-prefix-class=\"uwm-p-tabs\"><ul class=\"uwm-p-tablist\" data-hx=\"h2\"><li class=\"uwm-p-tablist--item\"><a href=\"#tab-kwrx-eligibility\" class=\"uwm-p-tablist--link\">Eligibility<\/a><\/li><li class=\"uwm-p-tablist--item\"><a href=\"#tab-kwrx-selection-criteria\" class=\"uwm-p-tablist--link\">Selection Criteria<\/a><\/li><li class=\"uwm-p-tablist--item\"><a href=\"#tab-kwrx-submission-details\" class=\"uwm-p-tablist--link\">Submission Details<\/a><\/li><li class=\"uwm-p-tablist--item\"><a href=\"#tab-kwrx-awards\" class=\"uwm-p-tablist--link\">Awards<\/a><\/li><\/ul><div class=\"uwm-p-tabcontent\">\n<div id=\"tab-kwrx-eligibility\" class=\"uwm-p-tabcontent--pane\">\n<p>The Scheinfeld Entrepreneurial Awards Competition is open to current undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Consistent with the donor\u2019s wishes, all venture teams&nbsp;must include at least one Lubar College of Business student. For the purposes of the awards, a current student is defined as one who is enrolled in good standing in undergraduate or graduate courses at UWM during the current academic year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"tab-kwrx-selection-criteria\" class=\"uwm-p-tabcontent--pane\">\n<p>Awards from the Fund will be based on the following criteria: (a) business viability of the start-up venture; (b) scalability and potential for growth and job creation; (c) ability of the venture to attract other sources of financing (from team members themselves, family friends, banks, angel investors etc.); and (d) launch readiness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"tab-kwrx-submission-details\" class=\"uwm-p-tabcontent--pane\">\n<p>The competition timeline runs from May through June. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interested individuals must first complete and submit the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/business\/forms\/intent-to-compete-scheinfeld-entrepreneurial-awards\/\">Intent to Compete Form<\/a>\u00a0by Monday, May 11, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All venture teams entering the competition are required to submit a comprehensive business plan by midnight on Monday, June 1, 2026 and if selected, make an oral presentation of the business plan to the Entrepreneurial Awards Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Business plans should be submitted directly to <a href=\"mailto:kmwiegel@uwm.edu\">Kennedy Wiegel <\/a>and should be a maximum of 20 pages in length. Up to 20 additional pages of appendices may be included. Included in the appendices should be a minimum of three years of financials, reported by quarter and by year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A cover letter, <\/strong>that includes the following information, should accompany the business plan submission:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An executive summary of your business.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Team captain\u2019s name, email address, home address, phone number, year in school, and major<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Same information as above for all other team members (Remember your team must include at least one current student from the Lubar College of Business)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The 2026 final competition is scheduled for Monday, June 16th and will be held in-person.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Entrepreneurial Awards Committee will review each business plan submitted and then select those individuals\/teams who will be invited to orally present their plan. All oral presentations are limited to 10 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of Q&amp;A by the Entrepreneurial Awards Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although used in the context of other competitions, the following informational sources may be helpful in developing a business plan:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/business\/students\/competitions\/lamacchia-new-venture-business-plan-competition\/#tab-kqqy-submission-guidelines\">LaMacchia&nbsp;New Venture Business Plan Guidelines<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/sce\/program_area\/small-business-development-center\/\">UWM School of Continuing Education Small Business Development Center Complimentary Resources<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"tab-kwrx-awards\" class=\"uwm-p-tabcontent--pane\">\n<p>A maximum of three awards will be made in each year, ranging from $5,000 to $15,000. An award above this range may be made in the case of exceptionally promising ventures. It is also possible that no awards may be made in a given funding cycle if the submitted applications are assessed to be not a strong fit with the Fund\u2019s selection criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The James D. Scheinfeld Entrepreneurial Awards are generally made in one of two formats:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cHonor loans\u201d to be repaid to the Fund if and when recipients are financially able to do so, to enable the Fund to make similar awards to future generations of student entrepreneurs; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With consent of the UWM Foundation, the awards may also take the form of equity participation in student ventures (e.g. stock or stock warrants).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-p-lg\"><strong>Entrepreneurial Awards Committee<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Entrepreneurial Awards Committee is made up of Lubar College and UWM faculty with expertise in entrepreneurship, and members of Milwaukee\u2019s entrepreneurial community.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"has-css-opacity  uwm-u-mt-0\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h4\" id=\"h-about-james-d-scheinfeld\">About James D. Scheinfeld\u2019s<\/strong>&nbsp;legacy included a noteworthy entrepreneurial career and a personal commitment to civic involvement.
