SUMMARY:Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Research
DESCRIPTION:Large language models (LLMs) and artificial intelligence (AI) are generating a tidal wave of transformative change\, increasing productivity\, and generating more than a trillion words each day. The upswing in the quantity of scholarly work and journal submissions\, however\, has also made more pertinent questions how we could use AI responsibly in conducting research\, while preserving research integrity and maintaining human accountability. Furthermore\, what does AI use mean for the broader community of readers\, scholars\, reviewers\, authors\, and editors? \nOur distinguished panel will discuss how AI-assisted research and creativity could augment the scientific discovery process\, as well as potentially harm it. What is the need for editorial oversight regarding the use of AI in data analysis and manuscript development? What constitutes an appropriate level of transparency and the disclosure of how\, when\, and where authors have utilized AI in their submissions or underlying research? When is AI use synergistic or antithetical to mainlining the quality and standards of academic journals which value human voice and research transparency. \nDr. Daniel Muzio is a Professor of Management. He joined York in 2018 from the University of Newcastle\, having previously worked at the Universities of: Manchester\, Leeds and Lancaster. He has held visiting positions at the University of Oxford\, Cass Business School\, and Luiss Guido Carli in Rome. SUMMARY:Creative Destruction in the Healthcare Sector: Hospital Closures and Patient Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Lubar Research Seminar Series \nSpeaker:  Tim Liu\, University of Utah\n \nSince 2010\, the US has seen the net closure of over 100 hospitals\, underscoring a need to better understand how closures impact patient outcomes. Using confidential patient-level data\, we track patients who are displaced from closed hospitals and forced to seek treatment elsewhere\, measuring their outcomes pre and post closure. We find that individuals whose hospital closes and who subsequently switch to another facility experience better health outcomes\, relative to patients who do not lose their hospital. Patients displaced by closures tend to receive treatment at higher-quality hospitals characterized by stronger financial performance and higher staffing ratios\, suggesting that market exit by inefficient providers may reallocate patients toward better-performing institutions. While displaced patients who remain in the hospital system find higher quality care\, we find evidence that elderly patients in rural areas experience elevated mortality outside of the hospital system\, suggesting limited accessibility to substitute providers. Overall\, our findings reveal heterogeneous effects of hospital closures: while they may enhance care quality and efficiency for most patients\, they pose significant risks to patient health in immobile populations. \nTim Liu is an Assistant Professor of Finance at the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business. His research focuses on corporate finance\, labor economics\, and healthcare. He earned his PhD in Finance from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and holds both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. His work has been published in the Review of Financial Studies.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Regulatory Enforcement Spillovers and Common Ownership: Evidence from AAER-Linked Firms
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Lubar Research Seminar Series \nSpeaker:  Andy Imdieke\, University of Notre Dame\n \nThis study examines whether regulatory enforcement actions against one firm influence financial reporting quality of other firms that share significant institutional blockholders. Using a sample of Accounting and Auditing Enforcement Releases (AAERs)\, we find evidence consistent with incremental within industry deterrence spillovers for commonly held peers. That is\, we find that firms that share both the industry and a blockholder with the AAER release firm experience fewer restatements and missed material weaknesses following the AAER release compared to firms that share the industry but do not share a blockholder. These findings suggest that enforcement effects extend beyond sanctioned firms to commonly held peers. In additional analysis\, we find evidence that commonly held peer firms are more likely to change auditors after the AAER release. Our results highlight a portfolio-level dimension of regulatory enforcement\, demonstrating that ownership concentration can amplify enforcement effectiveness which is suggestive of a previously unknown benefit of common institutional ownership.

SUMMARY:Contemporary Ownership: Promises and Challenges Webinar
DESCRIPTION:During the last four decades\, corporate governance regulations sought to enhance corporate accountability by empowering shareholders and aligning the interests of corporate executives to those of corporate shareholders. The number of US publicly traded corporations\, however\, has shrunk by half since its 1996 peak\, while the number of firms backed by private equity increased nearly six-fold\, paving the way for recent initiatives to ‘democratize access to alternative assets.’ While these developments may be unsurprising in the face of a $130T global asset management industry\, they raise the question whether investors’ interests can be protected if the underlying resilience and well-being of American companies is ignored\, and organizational interests are reduced to the dynamically changing interests of their investors. \nThe distinguished panel will address three key points: (i) pivotal regulatory changes with respect to contemporary ownership\, (ii) shareholder empowerment in the context of heterogenous investor interests and concentration of diversified asset managers\, and (iii) systemic consequences for American companies\, investment fund beneficiaries\, and stakeholders. \nLeo E. Strine\, Jr.\, is Of Counsel in the Corporate Department at Wachtell\, Lipton\, Rosen & Katz and serves as the Michael L. Wachter Distinguished Fellow in Law and Policy at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and a Senior Fellow of the Harvard Program on Corporate Governance.  Prior to joining the firm\, he was the Chief Justice of the Delaware Supreme Court from early 2014 through late 2019.  Before becoming the Chief Justice\, he served on the Delaware Court of Chancery as Chancellor since June 22\, 2011\, and as a Vice Chancellor since November 9\, 1998. \nKeith Johnson is CEO of Global Investor Collaboration Services\, a consulting firm that provides governance and educational services to institutional investors on a global basis. He previously co-headed the Institutional Investor Legal Services Group at Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren\, where he was selected by national peers to be included in Best Lawyers in America for corporate governance expertise. Prior to Reinhart\, he served as Chief Legal Officer for the State of Wisconsin Investment Board and President of the National Association of Public Pension Attorneys (NAPPA). Keith also co-edited the Cambridge University Handbook of Institutional Investment and Fiduciary Duty and taught corporate governance as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Wisconsin Law School. \nJessica Wirth Strine is managing partner and CEO at Jasper Street\, which she co-founded in 2020 following nearly twenty years in investment management. Jessica advises clients on shareholder engagement\, corporate governance practices\, and contentious proxy voting matters including activism. Prior to founding Jasper Street\, Jessica served as a senior director on the Investment Stewardship team at Vanguard where she oversaw proxy voting and led engagement with directors and executives at public companies across the U.S. and led the firm’s interdisciplinary ESG working group. Prior to Vanguard\, Jessica worked in active equity portfolio management at BlackRock where she served as a director of research and an energy sector portfolio manager; at Putnam Investments where she managed natural resources sector funds and directed energy investments across the firm’s global\, international and U.S. funds; and at Wellington Management Company where she conducted equity research across the consumer and telecommunications sectors. Jessica holds a BA from Dartmouth College and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. She lives in Philadelphia with her husband and five children and serves on the board of directors of T1 Energy (NYSE: TE). \nNick Zuiker is a shareholder with Reinhart’s Institutional Investor Services (RIIS) Team\, where he represents institutional investors all aspects of the legal and economic issues related to institutional investors\, including fiduciary responsibilities\, plan governance\, litigation and tax legal services\, including development of investment beliefs and investment policy statements and establishment of policies and programs concerning corporate engagement and exercise of shareholder rights intended to reduce investor risk and increase long-term returns. Nick also represents institutional investors in negotiating favorable terms of investments in private equity funds and other alternative investment vehicles. Nick currently serves on the Markets Advisory Council for the Council of Institutional Investors (CII)\, as Secretariat for the Global Institutional Governance Network\, a forum of approximately 22 global institutional investors that meets periodically to discuss investor concerns and ESG issues\, and as a member of the National Association of Public Pension Attorneys (NAPPA) Investments Committee. \nSponsored by: M&I Center for Business Ethics \nRegistration Required

SUMMARY:Annual AI & Analytics Online Symposium - Mind Meets Machines: Insight and Artificial Intelligence Converge
DESCRIPTION:At the heart of the Center for Technology Innovation’s AI and Analytics Symposium is a fundamental shift: as these technologies become integral to decision-making across industries\, the question is no longer if we’ll collaborate with machines—but how. This event explores that evolving collaboration: how data\, algorithms\, and human judgment come together to drive innovation\, shape policy\, and influence business strategy. Through keynote talks\, cutting-edge research\, and a thought-provoking industry panel\, we’ll examine the practical realities\, challenges\, and opportunities of working at the intersection of human and machine intelligence. \nINDUSTRY KEYNOTE\nAgentic AI and IT’s Use Cases\n9:00am – 9:55am\, followed by a 5 minute break \nBalamurugan Balakreshnan\nChief Architect WMW Microsoft\n \nMicrosoft Agentic AI represents a transformative approach to artificial intelligence\, integrating autonomous agents with human ambition to drive business innovation and productivity. These AI-powered agents\, such as Microsoft 365 Copilot\, Azure AI Foundry Agents\, are designed to automate routine tasks\, enhance decision-making\, and streamline workflows across various industries. \n\nACADEMIC KEYNOTE\nIncentivizing The Content Creator When Tasks Can Be Delegated to Artificial Intelligence\n10:00am – 10:50am\, followed by a 10 minute break \nDJ Wu\nErnest Scheller Jr. Chair in Innovation\, Entrepreneurship and Commercialization\, Georgia Tech\n \nWe develop a game-theoretic model to examine how platforms should adjust revenue-sharing to incentivize human creators in the presence of AI tools. We show that while AI can aid content creation\, excessively strong AI may cause creators to shirk effort\, ultimately harming the platform and reducing social welfare. \n\n \nRESEARCH INSIGHTS\nTake Caution in Using LLMs as Human Surrogates: Scylla Ex Machina\n11:00am – 11:50am\, followed by a 10 minute break \nDokyun Lee\nKelli Questrom Associate Professor in Information Systems\, Boston University \nRecent studies suggest large language models (LLMs) can exhibit human-like reasoning\, aligning with human behavior in economic experiments\, surveys\, and political discourse. This has led many to propose that LLMs can be used as surrogates or simulations for humans in social science research. However\, LLMs differ fundamentally from humans\, relying on probabilistic patterns\, absent the embodied experiences or survival objectives that shape human cognition. We assess the reasoning depth of LLMs using the 11-20 money request game. Nearly all advanced approaches fail to replicate human behavior distributions across many models. Causes of failure are diverse and unpredictable\, relating to input language\, roles\, and safeguarding. These results advise caution when using LLMs to study human behavior or as surrogates or simulations. \n\nREALITY CHECK: WHERE AI MEETS BUSINESS\n12:00pm – 12:45pm \nSandeep Gangarapu\, Senior Applied Scientist\, Apple\nTimothy Johnson\, Demand Planning Manager\, Charter Steel\nWaqar Hasan\, CEO\, InComm Benefits \nModerator: Scott Schanke\, Director\, Center for Technology Innovation & Assistant Professor\, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee \n  \nRegistration Required

SUMMARY:Corporate Boards in Challenging Times: Advisors\, Supervisors\, Gatekeepers?
DESCRIPTION:The Board of Directors – a cornerstone of corporate governance responsible for management oversight\, executive compensation\, succession planning\, crisis management\, and\norganizational direction – faces unprecedented challenges today. These include intensifying shareholder activism\, global political and economic upheaval\, technological disruption\, cybersecurity threats\, artificial intelligence\, and an overall “sense of predictable future slipping away” (Zuboff\, 2019). According to the Spencer Stuart Global Board Survey (2024)\, over 75% of directors report heightened business uncertainty\, while fewer than one-third of CEOs believe they have the right board composition to address their\norganizations’ needs. Our distinguished panel will discuss three critical questions for contemporary board of directors: (1) balancing shareholder activism and short-term pressures against long-term value creation\, (2) navigating the board’s supervisory role versus its strategic advisory and gatekeeping functions\, and (3) addressing cybersecurity challenges and AI implications for board governance. \nChristina Ahmadjian has served as a non-executive director at major Japanese companies\, including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries\, the Japan Exchange Group (parent company of the Tokyo Stock Exchange)\, Asahi Group Holdings (parent company of Asahi Beer)\, and NEC. She advises Japanese companies and government on DEI\, corporate governance\, and innovation. Christina Ahmadjian is a professor at Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo. Her research interests include comparative corporate governance\, interorganizational networks and business groups\, the effect of global capital markets on local management practices\, and the changing face of the Japanese firm. She received her BA from Harvard University\, MBA from Stanford Business School\, and PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. Her publications have appeared in journals including Administrative Science Quarterly\, American Sociological Review\, Organization Science\, and the Journal of Law\, Economics\, and Organization. \nWilliam Foote is retired chairman and CEO of USG Corporation\, which he led from 1996 to 2011. He also served as a member of the board of Walgreens\, Kohler\, and a trustee of Williams College. He began his career at USG as vice president of strategic planning and served in a variety of increasingly responsible operating roles culminating in being named CEO in 1996. Prior to joining USG\, he was a senior engagement manager at McKinsey & Company in Chicago and assistant treasurer at Chase Manhattan Bank in New York. Mr. Foote is a member of The Business Council and The Greater Milwaukee Committee. Foote is former chairman of the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago\, a life trustee of Northwestern Memorial Hospital and a former trustee of the Museum of Science and Industry. He graduated cum laude from Williams College and holds a master’s degree from Harvard Business School. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and was a member of the Century Club at Harvard. \nNurit Nahum holds a Ph.D. in Strategy studies\, from Tel Aviv University\, Coller School of Management\, as well as having graduated from Harvard Business School’s Executive Education program. She is also an affiliated researcher at MMTC\, Jonkoping University\, Sweden. Her research interests are strategic decisions\, the long-term growth and prosperity of firms and corporate governance. Nurit serves as the chairperson of LOG Pharma Packaging\, and as a board member in various publicly traded firms\, and teaches strategic management at the MBA program\, TA university. Nurit is the former CEO of Ronin Investments\, a privately owned investment company\, VP of Economic and Business Development at Packer Plada Ltd.\, the CEO of the Business Consulting Unit at PWC Israel\, and has held other leadership roles in industrial and technology companies. \nRegistration Required \nSponsored by: M&I Center for Business Ethics

SUMMARY:Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Strategic Management
DESCRIPTION:AI and digital transformation have already transformed how we “live\, work\, and relate to one another” (Schwab\, 2024:29)\, with changes expected to further accelerate in the future. On one hand these developments could facilitate evidence-based strategic management\, boost innovation\, and offer “society a vastly more efficient way to coordinate its activities” (Mayer-Schönberger & Ramge\, 2018: 33). On the other hand\, they could bring new uncertainties\, such as “[w]hat’s left for firms when the traditional work of firms is either done through market transactions\, or by robots and computers that do not require human intervention” (Birkinshaw\, 2018: 196). Our distinguished panel will address the implications of AI for strategic management. \nNan Jia is Professor of Strategic Management at Marshall School of Business\, University of Southern California. She holds a PhD in Strategic Management from the Rotman School of Management\, University of Toronto (Canada). Her research interests include corporate political strategy\, business-governance relationships\, and applications of Artificial Intelligence technologies in management. Her research has been published in multiple top journals\, such as Strategic Management Journal\, Academy of Management Journal\, Organization Science\, Management Science\, Academy of Management Review\, and others. She currently serves as an associate editor for the Strategic Management Journal and on the editorial boards of multiple leading academic journals. \nAlex Murray is Assistant Professor of Management at Lundquist College of Business\, University of Oregon. His research addresses empirical and theoretical puzzles stemming from the technologically-driven phenomena of crowdfunding\, blockchain-based firms\, and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). His research is published in Academy of Management Review\, Organization Science\, Academy of Management Annals\, Business Horizons\, and others. He received his PhD from University of Washington and previously served as senior researcher at ETH Zurich. He is recipient of multiple best papers\, research\, teaching\, and reviewer awards\, and serves on the editorial boards of Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal and AMR\, and as guest editor of the special topic forum on “AI in Management” at Academy of Management Review. \nShaker Zahra is Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship and Robert E. Buuck Chair at Carlson School of Management\, University of Minnesota. His research studies entrepreneurship and new firm strategy in global technology and science industries\, technology strategy by new firms vs. incumbents\, role of digital technology\, and emergence of new organizational forms in ecosystems. Widely published in leading academic journals\, he is among the most highly cited in the field of management. He is Fellow of the Academy of Management and Academy of International Business\, and Research Fellow of the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers and several other organizations. In recognition of his “creative and impactful contributions to entrepreneurship research\,” Professor Zahra received the Academy of Management Entrepreneurship Division‘s award. He served as academic director of the Holmes Entrepreneurship Center and co-founding director of the university-wide Center for Integrative Leadership. He also held several chaired visiting international positions and has served in leadership positions on multiple editorial boards. \nRegistration Required \nSponsored by: M&I Center for Business Ethics

SUMMARY:Private Equity: Eclipse of the Public Corporation or Symptom of Systemic Problem?
DESCRIPTION:The private equity sector has experienced explosive growth\, with assets under management quadrupling over the past decade to exceed $8 trillion. While institutional investors continue to increase their private equity allocations–prompting Bloomberg to observe that “Pension Funds are Hooked on Private Equity: No Matter the Risks”– concerns have emerged about private equity’s impact on organizational stakeholders\, portfolio companies\, and broader society. As public corporations in the US have declined by half since 1996\, while private equity-backed firms have increased six-fold in the past two decades (JPMorgan\, 2023)\, a crucial question emerges: Does this shift herald: (i) an improvement in corporate governance\, business productivity\, social responsibility and investor returns; or (ii) does it signal deeper systemic issues that transcend public markets? \nJeff Hooke was a Senior Lecturer at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School from 2016 to 2024\, and he continues to teach courses on a part-time basis. He is a broad-based finance and investment executive with global experience throughout the U.S.\, Europe and the emerging markets of Latin America and Asia.  He was a Managing Director of Focus Securities\, an M&A-oriented boutique investment bank\, prior to joining Carey. Earlier\, Hooke focused on emerging market investment and private equity.  He was a director at the Emerging Markets Partnership\, a $5 billion private equity group. Earlier\, he was a Principal Investment Officer of the International Finance Corporation\, the $30 billion private sector division of the World Bank.\nJeff Hooke began his career as an investment officer in the private placement department of Metropolitan Life Insurance. His New York investment banking career covered two major firms: Lehman Brothers and Schroder Wertheim. Mr. Hooke has an MBA from the Wharton School and a BS degree (cum laude) from the University of Pennsylvania. He has authored many publications and five books\, including M&A: A Practical Guide to Doing the Deal\, Security Analysis and Business Valuation on Wall Street\, and The Myth of Private Equity. \nView the recording here. \nSponsored by: M&I Center for Business Ethics

SUMMARY:Webinar: Bridging Realities: AI in Enhancing Human Experience
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE FOR SYMPOSIUM LINK \nSymposium Agenda: \nINDUSTRY KEYNOTE\nIntro to LLMs\, and How to Harness Their Power\n9:00am – 9:50am\, followed by a 10 minute break \nPrasad Chalasani\nCo-Founder and Lead Architect\nLangroid \nWith the release of ChatGPT and similar Large Language Models (LLMs)\, we are witnessing a truly transformative moment in the field of NLP and AI. These models\nexhibit remarkable capabilities much beyond simple text continuation: they can follow instructions\, engage in natural conversation\, and perform tasks from just a few examples. Their behavior mimics human-like\nunderstanding\, planning\, reasoning and problem-solving. While these abilities are doubtless impressive\, LLMs have limitations: they are brittle\, they can deviate from instructions\, they can hallucinate\, they have limited context length and they can be expensive to use. In this talk I will give a brief history of LLMs\, and discuss their capabilities and limitations. I will then argue that leveraging LLMs requires a principled programming framework\, in particular an agent-oriented framework. I will introduce Langroid\, an open-source Python framework for building LLM applications using Multi-Agent Programming\, and share a few examples of how to use Langroid. My hope is to stimulate the audience to think about how LLMs can help in their fields and perhaps even dive into building LLM applications. \nPrasad Chalasani earned his BTech in CS from IIT Kharagpur\, and his PhD in ML from CMU. After a brief stint in academia (Los Alamos\, ASU)\, he spent a decade in quant finance (Goldman Sachs\, Hedge Funds)\, and another decade in Tech\, leading ML teams at Yahoo and MediaMath. He is a co-founder and lead architect of Langroid\, github.com/langroid/langroid\, which aims to simplify LLM application development with a multi-agent approach. He is currently an ML/LLM consultant. \n\nBeyond Human Intuition: AI’s Role in Modern Decision Making\n10:00am – 10:50am\, followed by a 10 minute break \nKambiz Saffarizadeh\, Assistant Professor\, University of Texas-Arlington\nEkaterina Jussupow\, Assistant Professor\, Technical University Darmstadt\nBowen Lou\, Assistant Professor\, University of Connecticut \nModerator: Scott Schanke\, Director\, Center for Technology Innovation & Assistant Professor\, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee \n\n \nACADEMIC KEYNOTE\nLeveraging AI for Business and Society\n11:00am – 11:50am\, followed by a 10 minute break \nRavi Bapna\nCurtis L.
