Professor Purush Papatla Joins Leadership of Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute

Dr. Purush Papatla, Professor of Marketing and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the Lubar School of Business, has been appointed as UWM’s Interim Co-Director of the Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute (DSI).  The new institute, which was announced in June, will focus on strengthening the technology talent pipeline, promote Milwaukee as a region that attracts and retains technology firms and talent, and solve problems with research across the many facets of data science.

Dr. Papatla is an expert in consumer marketing, specializing in Big Data and social media. In collaboration with co-directors from Northwestern Mutual and Marquette University, he will work with faculty, staff, and company representatives on academic and professional development curricula, research projects, and other foundational elements of the Institute

Over the next five years, Northwestern Mutual and its foundation will contribute $12.5 million, and UWM and Marquette will each contribute in kind and fundraising of $11.25 million in support of the institute’s initiatives.

“Increasingly, our world is using ‘big data’ to solve problems,” said UWM Chancellor Mark A. Mone. “Here at UWM, data science is interdisciplinary and spans research in social welfare, computer science, health, business, engineering, and many other areas on and off campus. We are thrilled to step forward in collaboration with Northwestern Mutual and Marquette University to draw us closer to building a region that is rich in technological and analytical expertise and that attracts new and strengthens existing organizations and industries while enriching our students and communities.”
