The UW-Milwaukee La Macchia Entrepreneur Internship Program (LEIP) is a unique internship opportunity designed to give junior, senior, and master students hands-on, real-world experience with an entrepreneur while earning three internship credits and an internship stipend.

Who is Eligible?

UWM junior, senior, or master students who have an interest in entrepreneurship. Interns must have competence in financial analysis, information systems, or marketing, and a strong scholastic record. Students who are enrolled in, or have completed, Entrepreneurship course number Bus Adm 447 will be given preference in the selection process.

What Can a Student Expect from the Internship?

  • Interns will work closely with an entrepreneur and be exposed to the dynamics of running their own business.
  • Interns may work various projects with the entrepreneur, including corporate strategic planning, marketing plan development, and financial planning.
  • Interns will work 225 hours over the Fall or Spring semester, usually 15 hours per week for 15 weeks.
  • Interns will earn $4000 for work performed during the course of the internship. ($2000 paid in mid-October/mid-March and $2000 paid in mid-December/mid-May by the La Macchia Program)
  • Interns must enroll in Bus Adm 490, Entrepreneurship Internship/Practicum for three academic credits. Master’s degree students will enroll in Bus Adm 799, also for three academic credits.
  • This is done upon acceptance into the Program. Interns meet regularly with a UWM Entrepreneur – In – Residence who monitors the progress of the internship. Interns will attend at least two UWM sponsored presentations by local entrepreneurs.

Interns will be required to submit a final report on projects and activities completed during the term of the internship.

What is the Selection Process?

  • Students apply for participation in the internship program through the Career Center via Handshake
  • Applications are reviewed by a committee of business school faculty and staff.
  • Selected students are then interviewed by prospective employers who make the final hiring decisions.
