President, UWM Student Association
Today I wanted to share with you some of my concerns concerning the proposed budget, and how it will have a negative impact for the UW System.
Many of the students that I’ve talked to have shared their fears about the size of the cuts. It is simply too large and too fast to manage.
This cut will make it much more difficult to graduate in four years and to get a job, which is already difficult.
Fifty-nine percent of students who plan on graduating in four years end up graduating in six.
This cut will also have a negative impact on UWM’s ability to conduct research, research which is economically vital to the state of Wisconsin. The investment in UW-Milwaukee in turn contributes $1.5 billion back into the Wisconsin economy.
An investment in higher education is an investment in the state, the economy, and an investment in future generations.
With that I’m glad to hear that some of you have expressed concerns about the size of the amount of the cuts. That is why I also respectfully ask all of you to lower the amount of the cut to the UW System and invest in higher education.
Again, thank you for your service to Wisconsin, and GO PANTHERS!
